Calling All Antiques Lovers: Four Hands and Van Thiel’s New Collection Just Launched
The article announces the launch of a new furniture collection resulting from a collaboration between Four Hands and Van Thiel, designed to blend heirloom craftsmanship with modern functionality. This collection, featuring over 25 antique-inspired pieces, is set to debut at the High Point Fall Market. The collaboration aims to cater to a renewed interest in traditional and heritage designs, reimagining archived Van Thiel designs to meet contemporary home needs. Adam Dunn, Vice President of Design at Four Hands, highlights that the collection draws inspiration from the Van Thiel family's extensive history in antiques dealing, resulting in pieces that evoke an aged and time-worn aesthetic. This effect is achieved through the careful selection of materials, distressing techniques, and specialized finishes that accentuate the unique artistry and craftsmanship of each item.
The collection includes pieces like the "Please No More Doors" cabinet, which is inspired by Scandinavian antiques and features both drawers and wine storage behind panel glass doors. Another notable piece is the hand-distressed “It Takes an Hour” sideboard, which draws inspiration from Chinese styles. The playful names assigned to the pieces are intended to further connect them to the concept of stories passed down through generations, much like genuine antiques. Dunn explains that a mix of solid and veneer woods is used for tabletops, cabinet doors, and panels to mitigate issues like movement, checking, and cracking that can occur with solid wood, thereby creating stronger, more durable furniture designed to be passed down through generations.
The designs incorporate grand scales and exposed joints to introduce a modern touch, while weathering techniques contribute to a collected and curated appearance. For example, the “1500 Kilometer” dining table, a large-scale vintage-style piece crafted from solid pine, features a hand-distressed finish and is available in both aged brown and natural finishes, capable of seating 12 individuals. The distressing of solid wood frames is meticulously applied by hand, emphasizing grain movement, softening corners, and breaking hard edges. These methods are designed to mimic the natural wear and tear seen on authentic antiques, specifically in areas that would typically be touched or kicked over time. The finishing process involves a combination of paint and stain, which are distressed and rubbed away to enhance the natural aging appearance of each piece.
Rudy van Thiel Sr., with over 50 years of experience in the antiques and furniture industry, underscores the importance of the finishing’s effects and application. He notes that finishes have been studied globally, leading to the development of unique techniques where careful attention is paid to areas that would authentically experience wear and tear. The Four Hands x Van Thiel collection is accessible to trade professionals through the Four Hands Marketplace and directly to consumers via Scout & Nimble. The collection aims to offer heirloom-quality pieces that will bring lasting joy to future generations within well-curated interiors.
