sancal magnum chairs cradle consumers in british-esque comfort
The 'Magnum' soft seat family, a collaboration between Spanish brand Sancal and industrial and interior design studio estudiHac, debuted at Salone del Mobile 2017. This furniture collection, which includes stools, lounge chairs, and dining chairs, is characterized by its enigmatic design that blends elegance with a touch of eccentricity. The unifying design element across the collection is a distinctive seat shape that transitions from a straight collar to a broader bottom, evoking the form of cognac brandy glasses found in exclusive London members-only clubs. This design philosophy aims to provide users with an expansive, surrounding, and supportive embrace, mirroring how such glasses cradle fine liquids.
EstudiHac, led by Jose Manuel Ferrero, has designed the 'Magnum' pieces to exude a sense of refined luxury, reminiscent of the bespoke tailoring found in London's West End. The collection offers a diverse range of upholstery options, allowing for unique and sophisticated personalization. This variety in finishes highlights the furniture's adaptability, making it suitable for a wide array of environments. Whether placed in a bustling public bar, an intimate family dining room, or a private members' club lounge, the 'Magnum' collection is designed to integrate seamlessly into both public and domestic spaces, regardless of their scale or ambiance.
Further enhancing their versatility, the stools, lounge chairs, and dining chairs are available with a choice of four distinct bases: gold-colored plinths, lacquered metal central feet, upholstery bases, or traditional four legs. This customization allows for tailored aesthetics and functional suitability, enabling the furniture to meet diverse design requirements and personal preferences. The 'Magnum' collection represents the latest successful partnership between estudiHac and Sancal, building upon their previous 'Tea' family set, which was introduced in 2010.
Jose Manuel Ferrero's design approach for 'Magnum' draws inspiration from various pinnacles of elegance across different domains. He has cited influences such as the grand adventures depicted in the film 'Around the World in 80 Days,' the timeless and classic design of Morgan cars, and the progressive architectural forms, textures, and volumes exemplified by Herzog & de Meuron's 'Elbphilharmonie' in Hamburg, Germany. These diverse inspirations contribute to the collection's sophisticated aesthetic and its ability to evoke a sense of grandeur and timeless appeal. The chairs, therefore, are not merely functional objects but embody a narrative of classic elegance and thoughtful design.
