When They Couldn’t Find the Perfect Wallpaper, These Parents Painted Their Own
Jordan Ferney, a designer, faced a common dilemma during the renovation of her family's rental apartment in New York City: finding the ideal wallpaper for her 4-year-old daughter Simone’s bedroom. Her primary concern was the visible repeats in commercially available wallpapers, which she found distracting. She had previously attempted to mask these imperfections by strategically placing furniture against walls. Initially, Ferney sought a chinoiserie-style pattern with a large repeat to create an immersive atmosphere. However, her search proved challenging, leading her to consider an alternative.
Ferney's husband, Paul, an artist, offered a solution: to paint a custom mural. Collaborating, they designed a whimsical landscape for Simone's room, featuring blossoming tree branches set against a soft pink sky, Simone's favorite color. Paul painted the mural at approximately 50 percent scale to minimize the appearance of repeats. The couple then explored various production companies to print their design, eventually finding one that could achieve a repeat only every ninth panel, effectively addressing Ferney's concern about visual monotony.
The bedroom’s other furnishings were chosen to complement the mural and cater to a child's needs. These included a forest green Urban Outfitters side table, often used for tea parties, and practical IKEA storage shelves, consistent with those in her older sons' room. A creamy pink &Tradition pendant lamp was selected to cast a warm, inviting glow. Ferney also advocates strongly for toddler beds, emphasizing their space-saving benefits in compact New York City apartments, even if used for only a few years, as every square inch is valuable.
The custom mural project was so successful that the Ferneys decided to commercialize their design. They now offer the print as peel-and-stick wallpaper through Furbish Studio, making their unique design accessible to others. Simone, the inspiration behind the project, expresses delight in her personalized room, frequently telling visitors that her 'Daddy painted this for me,' highlighting the personal touch and satisfaction derived from this creative solution.
This DIY approach not only resolved a specific design challenge but also transformed a personal project into a commercial venture. It underscores the value of custom solutions in home decoration, particularly when standard options do not meet specific aesthetic or functional requirements. The article also provides insight into practical furniture choices for children's rooms in urban environments and the emotional significance of personalized decor.
