This Clay Brick Disperses Heat to Keep Buildings Cool
Architects Miguel Niño and Johanna Navarro, founders of Sumart Diseño y Arquitectura SAS, a studio dedicated to sustainable architectural solutions, have developed the Bloque Termodisipador BT. This innovative ceramic block is designed with an irregular cross-section that facilitates air circulation, thereby significantly reducing heat transfer into building interiors. The development originated from a desire to leverage the natural properties of clay, a material abundant in Colombia's Cúcuta region, for architectural applications.
The Bloque Termodisipador BT addresses the challenge of maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures in warm climates without relying heavily on mechanical cooling systems. Traditional clay bricks, while providing some insulation, often absorb and radiate heat, contributing to higher indoor temperatures. The BT brick's design innovatively incorporates internal channels and an irregular shape that promotes natural convection. This allows air to flow through the brick's core, carrying away heat and creating a cooling effect.
