How to Design a Desert Glam Bedroom
This article details the process of transforming an outdated, mint-colored bedroom in a Phoenix suburb into a modern bohemian retreat with a desert glam aesthetic. Pinterest influencer and stylist Alexandra Evjen, upon moving into her new home in Chandler, Arizona, immediately addressed the room's initial state by replacing the old carpeting and painting the walls white, creating a blank canvas for design. She then sought professional assistance through Decorist, an online home decor service, where she completed a questionnaire outlining her design goals, preferred retailers, and inspirations. This led to her matching with California-based designer Jessica McCarthy, who Evjen felt could understand her style and elevate her vision for the space.
The design process was conducted entirely virtually, with Jessica in California and Alexandra in Arizona, using Decorist's online messaging platform for all communications, from initial design concepts to execution and styling. This virtual collaboration allowed for a seamless design experience without the need for in-person meetings. The core design concept revolved around creating a modern bohemian retreat inspired by the Arizona desert, incorporating elements of 1970s vintage glam. Evjen allowed McCarthy to lead the initial design, while she actively participated in the styling phase, shopping for decorative accents and coordinating with McCarthy via text.
A significant challenge was ensuring the bedroom maintained a gender-neutral aesthetic, accommodating all occupants. To achieve this, the designers worked to create a more masculine bohemian vibe, drawing inspiration from the Arizona desert to differentiate it from a typically feminine bohemian style. This involved combining masculine elements such as neutral colors, deep tones, and natural materials with glamorous touches like fur, feathers, and metallics. Whimsical elements, including a hanging chair, furry ottomans, and a curved rattan bed, were also integrated into the design.
The bedroom, initially lacking architectural interest, was enhanced through strategic design choices. A unique, curving rattan bed was selected to provide a canopy-like effect without being overtly feminine, addressing the need for structural interest. To add depth and visual appeal to the previously plain white space, a dramatic dark turquoise accent wall was painted behind the bed. This bold backdrop beautifully contrasted with white bedding and a beige juju hat. Originally, Evjen requested two reading chairs, but due to space and cost constraints, a dreamy hanging chair was installed, providing a cozy reading nook. A vintage emerald tufted leather bench, a unique personal touch from Evjen, was placed at the foot of the bed, adding individuality and history to the room. The reading nook was further cozier with a layered cowhide rug over a larger area rug. Metallic accents, such as a rose gold himmeli-shaped candle holder on the bedside table and brass elements in the chandelier and bedside lamps, introduced elements of glamour. The bedside lamps, featuring painted metal shades and marble bases, doubled as both art and light sources. Mid-century nightstands with unique pulls and slim legs, along with agate accessories serving as stylish bookends and natural shades of aging paper from books, contributed to the sophisticated bohemian look. Finally, three different houseplants were incorporated to introduce natural elements and further enhance the bohemian aesthetic, bringing a sense of airiness and life into the space.
