jeff da-yu shi: LED bamboo lighting
Taiwanese designer Jeff Dah-Yue Shi, through his Dragonfly Design Center, has developed innovative lighting solutions that integrate bamboo and dimmable LEDs. His work, particularly the 'LED-bamboo' wall, ceiling, and floor luminaire, earned him the 2011 Gold Pin Design Mark award from the Taiwan Design Center. Shi presented these designs and discussed the versatile properties of bamboo fibers at Hong Kong's Business of Design Week (BODW). His approach highlights the aesthetic and functional potential of sustainable materials in contemporary design.
The core innovation of the 'LED-bamboo' luminaire lies in its modular rhombus forms, each incorporating an LED light source. These LEDs are strategically placed at the base of each rhombus, covered by tempered glass and faced with a thin bamboo veneer. This construction allows the bamboo to appear as a seamless part of the surface when the light is off, only revealing its illuminated presence when activated. The design achieves a harmonious integration of natural materials with modern technology, creating a subtle yet impactful lighting effect.
The modularity of the rhombus forms, combined with varying patterns and three levels of color intensity, generates an optical illusion of three-dimensionality. This feature allows the luminaire to function not only as a lighting system but also as a decorative and structural element within a space. The versatility of the 'LED-bamboo' system makes it suitable for diverse environments, ranging from luxurious clubs and corporate offices to residential settings, demonstrating its adaptability to different aesthetic and functional requirements.
In addition to the modular luminaire, Jeff Dah-Yue Shi also designed the bamboo tube LED lamp, a smaller, more accessible lighting system. This cylindrical lamp prioritizes simplicity in manufacturing and reduced material consumption. It features a thin bamboo veneer strategically placed over perforations, which diffuses the light from the internal LED bulb to emit a warmer glow. The tubing of this lamp is constructed from rolled bamboo sheets, a method that ensures its durability and prevents cracking.
A distinctive feature of the bamboo tube LED lamp is its magnetic base. This allows the lamp to be easily attached to various surfaces, including walls and ceilings, creating an impression of defying gravity. The magnetic attachment is robust enough to permit users to adjust the lamp's position by pushing or pulling it along the surface, offering flexibility in directing light and adapting to changing spatial needs. Both designs underscore Shi's commitment to combining traditional materials with innovative technology to create functional and aesthetically pleasing products.
