These Are the 7 Biggest Lighting Trends for 2024
Lighting plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere and functionality of any room, as emphasized by Vicky Serany, founder and principal of Southern Studio Interior Design. She notes that clients often underestimate the significance of lighting in the design process, highlighting its ability to transform a space from bright and open to moody and intimate. Upgrading lighting fixtures offers a straightforward and budget-friendly method to refresh a room, according to Paula Daher, principal of Daher Interior Design, who suggests that replacing outdated fixtures can instantly revitalize a space. This is particularly relevant given that our eyes require more light as we age, making functional improvements a key consideration. The article outlines seven key lighting trends for 2024, designed to update and enhance interior spaces.
One prominent trend is layered lighting, a technique that involves combining various light sources such as recessed lights, pendants, sconces, lamps, undercabinet lighting, and toe kicks. Kerrie Kelly, CEO and creative director of Kerrie Kelly Studio, explains that this approach creates a balanced and adaptable illumination scheme, contributing to both the beauty and utility of a room. Even in existing spaces, layering can be implemented by favoring lamps, sconces, and candles over overhead lighting, with dimmer switches further enhancing versatility. Another emerging trend is subtle styling, moving away from large, ornate fixtures like oversized statement pendants and Sputnik lights, which can cast unusual shadows and dominate a space. Instead, there is a preference for delicate or mobile-style lights over kitchen islands and shallow flush-mount fixtures that offer an artistic touch without being overly utilitarian.
Interesting textures in lampshades and fixtures are also gaining popularity. This involves a departure from conventional yellow-tinted or neutral shades in favor of decorative options for table lamps, floor lamps, and sconces. Woven basket-style lampshades, offering a rustic and English cottage aesthetic, along with plaster and white gesso chandeliers and sconces, are fashionable choices. Glossy black shades are also noted for their ability to dramatically alter a lamp's appearance. Design markets have showcased innovative textures like eggshell and fixtures crafted from gemstones such as selenite. Bold colors and finishes represent another significant trend, with homeowners increasingly embracing vibrant hues in lighting fixtures, such as red or blue, to create elegant accents. Sarah Stacey, principal designer at Sarah Stacey Interior Design, observes a growing interest in Sicilian and Venetian design elements, particularly colored Murano glass. This reflects a broader movement towards incorporating bold colors, similar to current paint color trends.
Lighting is also being strategically used to accent specific design elements, extending beyond mere functionality to highlight architectural features, art, and furniture, while also adding depth and height to a room. Jen Samson, principal designer and owner of Jen Samson Design, points out that thoughtful lighting can even draw attention away from less desirable aspects of a space. Mixing old and new pieces is another trend that contributes to a homier and more inviting atmosphere. This involves integrating antique lighting, such as a vintage Murano glass fixture, with modern, linear designs to create a unique and personalized aesthetic, avoiding the sterile feel of a showroom. Ultimately, while trends evolve, the overarching advice is to prioritize personal style, ensuring that lighting choices genuinely resonate with individual preferences and contribute to a distinctive home environment.
