The Best Bed Linens for Every Design Style

Achieving a stylish and soothing bedroom involves careful consideration of various design elements, from bedside tables and plants to wallpaper and paint colors. One crucial component often overlooked is the bedding itself, which can significantly impact the overall aesthetic. Selecting the right quilts, coverlets, shams, and skirts can appear daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Matouk, with 85 years of linen-making expertise, offers guidance on how to choose bedding to suit any design scheme. Mindy Matouk, creative director for John Matouk & Co., emphasizes that traditional versus modern labels are not always definitive in bedding choices. She suggests that elements like floral shams or classic monograms do not inherently make a bed traditional. Nevertheless, general design themes can serve as a starting point. Decorative edging such as embroidery or scalloping tends to create a classical feel, fitting styles from French countryside to coastal Cape Cod. In contrast, sleek lines, rich textures, and abstract patterns align with contemporary aesthetics like midcentury modern and Scandinavian decor. Flexibility in mixing and matching bedding pieces is encouraged. Matouk's entire line is available individually, allowing for personalized combinations. Duvet covers and euro shams are excellent for introducing color or pattern, especially when folded at the foot of a neutral bed. Pillow shams offer a low-risk way to incorporate bold prints, like botanical designs, while keeping larger bedding items neutral. Seasonal color transitions can be easily managed by swapping out shams available in multiple shades. Additionally, boudoir shams can act as a fun, interchangeable accent. The tactile quality of bed linens is as important as their visual appeal. Sleep preferences should guide material choices. For example, cold sleepers who prefer weight can opt for a duvet made from a light, breathable fabric like cotton percale for warmer months, or use a quilt, which inherently provides weight. During cooler seasons, a full comforter is suitable. For those who prefer lighter bedding, a quilt or coverlet combined with a blanket offers an elegant alternative, though Matouk advises keeping a comforter accessible in the linen closet. Bed skirts offer both aesthetic and practical benefits. They can conceal bed frames or storage space underneath the bed and help anchor taller bedframes in a room. A box-spring cover serves as a more casual, airier alternative. Above all, committing to quality is paramount when selecting bedding. Matouk explains that bed linens are foundational elements that influence how a bed feels as much as how it looks. High-quality, long-staple cotton, like that sourced by Matouk for decades, ensures a luxurious and durable product that can become part of a family's story for years. #BeddingDesign #HomeDecor #BedroomStyle #LinenSelection #InteriorDesignTips #MatoukLinens #TextileChoices #BeddingQuality #RoomDecoration #BeddingDesign #HomeDecor #BedroomStyle #LinenSelection #InteriorDesignTips #MatoukLinens #TextileChoices #BeddingQuality #RoomDecoration
