Smart Blinds: Window Covering in the Matter Standard

The Matter standard has incorporated support for window covering devices like roller blinds, shutters, and Venetian blinds since its initial Version 1.0 release. This specification defines crucial functionalities such as up and down movement, precise positioning, and tilt adjustments. Several manufacturers have already embraced this standard, introducing a variety of smart blind solutions to the market. Eve Systems, for instance, offers an Eve Blinds Collection that includes customized window blinds ordered online, alongside a tubular motor designed for retrofitting existing interior roller blinds. Another Dutch company, Coulisse, utilizes similar MotionBlind technology to integrate Matter support into its extensive range of installer products, covering everything from roller blinds and pleated blinds to Venetian and vertical blinds, as well as curtains. For DIY enthusiasts, SmartWings provides Matter-compatible motors as an alternative to their Zigbee and Z-Wave offerings, catering to those who prefer to install the drives themselves. These modern retrofit solutions often incorporate rechargeable batteries, eliminating the need for direct power connections. They communicate with control systems primarily through the Thread protocol, known as “Matter over Thread.” This eliminates the necessity for additional hardware installation, requiring only a Thread Border Router from compatible brands like Amazon, Apple, Google, or SmartThings for operation. Illustrations show the Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit, detailing the installation of a battery-powered motor into an existing roller blind, its USB-C charging mechanism, and the QR code for Matter commissioning located on the operating chain. Another image depicts a Coulisse MotionBlind curtain drive, with its battery concealed behind the fabric, leveraging Thread for radio communication. Alternatively, some motors utilize Wi-Fi networks for connectivity, referred to as “Matter over WiFi.” Manufacturers like Zemismart offer such drives. These Wi-Fi-enabled devices typically require a hardwired connection to a 240 or 120-volt mains due to the higher energy consumption of Wi-Fi chips compared to Thread products. Therefore, an accessible power socket or a wall-mounted power distributor is necessary for installation. A third option involves shading solutions that employ a Matter Bridge. In this setup, the specific radio protocol of the system (e.g., Bluetooth, Dect, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or proprietary protocols) becomes less relevant from a standards perspective. The Matter-enabled bridge translates the internal data traffic and transmits the necessary information to Matter platforms. German company Schoenberger Group, through its Jalousiescout brand, has developed a “JS Bridge” to connect their Jarolift and Julius Mayer shading products with Matter. This bridge was developed in collaboration with smart home specialist Mediola, which also offers a bridge for Somfy’s RTS radio protocol. Other companies such as Aqara, Ubisys, and Zemismart provide bridge functionalities within their Zigbee systems to integrate shading products with Matter platforms. SwitchBot also employs this strategy for its Bluetooth-based curtain and roller blind drives. While major smart home players like Bosch and Ikea have Matter-enabled hubs, their current implementations exclude shading products, focusing instead on lighting (Ikea) or electricity and heating (Bosch). This means that users of Ikea smart blinds or Bosch roller shutter actuators still need to rely on the respective system’s app or classic smart home integrations without Matter. However, AVM offers beta software for its Smarthome gateway, which supports compatible Zigbee products, including Ikea’s blackout and folding blinds (Fyrtur, Praktlysing, Tredansen), within Matter ecosystems. Challenges remain in the broader adoption of Matter for smart blinds. One issue is the inconsistent user experience across different Matter platforms. For example, Amazon Alexa interprets the degree of opening as the percentage of the window area covered, while Apple, Google, and SmartThings define it as the percentage of the open area. This discrepancy can lead to confusion and increased support inquiries. Additionally, definitions of “open” and “closed” can vary depending on the product type (e.g., an awning vs. a window blind), and current apps lack options to customize these statuses. Professional installers in the roller shutter and sun protection industry are also hesitant to adopt Matter. They often install products during early construction phases when internet, Wi-Fi, or functional IP infrastructure is unavailable. Furthermore, Matter commissioning typically requires the customer’s smartphone to integrate new products into their personal Matter Fabric, which is impractical on a construction site or during property transfers. Solutions are being developed, such as 1home’s planned system for installers to pre-configure Matter products for collective handover without needing the customer’s smartphone. Another concept is “cold” commissioning, where installers use Bluetooth on their smartphones to prepare drives on-site, providing a QR code for residents to scan later to transfer the Matter product to their smart home app. However, practical professional solutions are still some time away, explaining why major suppliers like Somfy and Warema are not rushing to fully embrace Matter, as they already have well-established systems. Currently, Matter’s entry into this market is primarily focused on the retrofit segment, targeting interior roller blinds, Venetian blinds, and curtains that require minimal installation in existing buildings. #SmartBlinds #MatterStandard #WindowCovering #SmartHomeTechnology #ThreadProtocol #WiFiConnectivity #MatterBridge #HomeAutomation #ProductInnovation #SmartBlinds #MatterStandard #WindowCovering #SmartHomeTechnology #ThreadProtocol #WiFiConnectivity #MatterBridge #HomeAutomation #ProductInnovation
