Say Goodbye To Vertical Blinds - Nate Berkus Has A Better Idea To Cover Sliding Glass Doors
In a move to update home interiors, HGTV's Nate Berkus suggests replacing traditional vertical blinds, popular in the 1980s and 1990s for their practicality with sliding glass doors, with drapery panels. Berkus advocates for a more elegant, layered aesthetic, recommending that fabric vertical blinds be swapped for drapes, particularly when wall space permits on either side of the door. If space is limited, the drapery can be designed to stack to one side. A key aspect of Berkus's advice is the mounting height of curtain rods. He emphasizes installing them as high as possible, ideally at the top of the wall or at the highest point, to draw the eye upward and prevent a visually 'cut-off' effect, enhancing the perceived height of the room.
To further enrich the space with warmth and dimension, Berkus supports layering curtains, such as using a double rod to hang sheers with heavier drapes. When selecting curtains, he shows a preference for those with inverted pleats or ripple folds. Berkus also provides guidelines for curtain length and hardware: drapes should be full and just skim the floor, hovering approximately ¼ inch above it, rather than pooling on the ground. For hardware, he suggests simple options like rings attached to a thin rod, favoring understated elegance. For individuals on a budget or those seeking a unique touch, DIY curtain rods offer an alternative to store-bought options.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, drapery panels offer functional benefits, notably their ability to brighten a room. Berkus highlights the transformative effect of light ivory linen floor-to-ceiling drapery against a dark paneled wall. This contrast, he notes, shifts the focus from the room's darkness to the striking interplay of light and shadow, effectively lightening the space. Other recommended drapery colors for similar brightening effects include ivory, off-white, bone, or chalk. This approach, according to Berkus, not only elevates the visual appeal of sliding glass doors but also contributes to a more inviting and visually expansive living environment.
