The best superyacht fireplaces
The article explores the integration of fireplaces into superyacht design, highlighting the technical challenges and aesthetic benefits of these features. It begins by introducing the 41-meter superyacht *Stefania*, whose Art Deco-inspired interiors, designed in-house by Dynamiq, feature a modern, fully-functioning bio-ethanol fireplace in the main saloon's dining area. Dynamiq founder Sergei Dobroserdov notes the fireplace's utility in cooler climates, given the yacht's 3,000 nautical mile cruising range.
Another featured superyacht is the 136-meter *Flying Fox*, which boasts five ethanol-fueled and real-wood fireplaces, in addition to two outdoor firepits. These elements, designed by Mark Berryman, aim to create a cozy, residential atmosphere. Florian Preuss, project manager at Lürssen, explains that these marine-compliant fireplaces function similarly to home fireplaces, with insulated ducts for smoke expulsion through the mast and safety features like a constantly closed glass pane and a shut-off mechanism.
The explorer yacht *Ragnar*, named after a Viking warrior, is designed for cold-water cruising. Its RWD-designed interiors feature wood-paneling and tartan patterns, and a traditional steam fireplace made of wood and grey stone adorns the upper saloon, with additional fireplaces in the cabins to enhance the homely feel.
*Avocette III*, a classic 1930s cruiser, underwent a significant interior refurbishment overseen by Bill Morong of Yachting Solutions. While maintaining its original exterior, the yacht's interior was updated to include a working stainless-steel fireplace, sourced by the owner from a London shop, positioned as the centerpiece of the convertible saloon/master cabin.
The 66.5-meter classic yacht *Haida 1929* is equipped with three fireplaces, located in the main saloon, owner's saloon, and formal dining room. These fireplaces utilize biofuel blocks, similar to those found in New York City apartments, providing real warmth unlike some decorative steam and LED alternatives, as explained by Captain Daan de Witt.
*Amadea*, a 106-meter Lürssen superyacht, showcases classic and regal interiors by Francois Zuretti. Its main saloon features a white marble stone fireplace with gold accents, contributing to a warm and cozy ambiance. An additional firepit on the aft deck offers an outdoor heating option.
The 95-meter Lürssen superyacht *Kismet*, launched in 2014, includes four fireplaces, with a notable firepit on the main deck ideal for pre-dinner gatherings. Owner Shahid Kahn, having previously owned the first *Kismet* (now *Global*), emphasized the inclusion of these features in the newer, larger vessel.
Finally, the 60-meter Perini Navi sailing yacht *Spirit Of The C's*, refitted between 2014 and 2016, features a long, thin gas fireplace in its main saloon. Rome-based architect Michela Reverberi integrated this accent piece with a sleek design, minimizing visual weight while enhancing the open-plan space. The 77.4-meter explorer yacht *Legend*, reborn at Icon Yachts under owner Jan Verkerk for Antarctic voyages, incorporates an elaborate main deck fireplace with ornate fish sculptures and dark woodwork, complemented by steam-powered Opti-myst fires. The Westport 130 *Far Niente*, a 39.62-meter superyacht designed by William Garden with interiors by Westport's in-house team and Halffman Designs, features an electric fireplace in its upper saloon, contributing to a warm atmosphere alongside panoramic views. These examples demonstrate the diverse approaches to incorporating fireplaces into superyacht design, prioritizing both aesthetic appeal and practical warmth.
