Local Landscape Experts Weigh in on Yardzen’s 2023 Outdoor Living Trends
The article discusses the 2023 Outdoor Living Trends Report by Yardzen, a prominent landscape design firm in the United States. The report’s findings, derived from homeowner insights and designer input, indicate a shift towards climate-responsible and low-maintenance outdoor spaces for spring and summer 2023. Key trends include drought-resistant plants, organic design principles, untamed textures, and well-being elements such as saunas and plunge pools.
Steve Modrow, founder and designer of biota Landscapes in Minneapolis, supports these trends, particularly the move away from traditional lawns to more sustainable alternatives in Minnesota. He highlights the increasing awareness among residents about water conservation due to extreme weather and drought conditions. Modrow notes the growing popularity of plunge pools, describing them as a practical solution for the local climate and urban yards with limited space. These pools offer a quick way to cool off on hot days and can be designed for both hot and cool temperatures, seamlessly integrating into various garden styles, including existing mature landscapes.
However, Modrow cautions that plunge pools require the same considerations as full-sized swimming pools regarding codes, safety, and cost. He advises consulting an experienced contractor to navigate these aspects. He also points out that a cool plunge pool is an ideal complement to a sauna, offering a quintessential Scandinavian experience in a backyard setting.
Karen Filloon, director of marketing and business development at Southview Design in St. Paul, further elaborates on the appeal of plunge pools, emphasizing their role in promoting socialization and providing a refreshing escape on hot days, distinguishing them from swimming pools which are often used for exercise. She mentions a client’s request for a side-by-side plunge pool and in-ground hot tub, showcasing a desire for versatile outdoor amenities. Filloon also observes a rising demand for fire features in outdoor living spaces, with client preferences ranging from fireplaces to fire pits and fire tables, available in gas or wood-burning options, some even with remote controls for added convenience and luxury.
In terms of ground cover, Filloon notes an increasing trend toward synthetic turf as an alternative to hardscapes for areas like dog runs, patio inlays, and pool decks, valued for its ease of use and low maintenance. Modrow echoes the sentiment of minimizing lawn care by advocating for bee- and butterfly-friendly perennial flowers, shrubs, and trees. He suggests clover as a good option for play areas and recommends planting diverse clover mixes. Another emerging trend is the adoption of low-mow grass mixes, which reach heights of 6 to 10 inches and require less frequent mowing and watering once established, offering the aesthetic of traditional turf grass while supporting a diverse plant palette.
The Yardzen report confirms homeowners' desire to reduce their environmental impact, with a significant increase in clients opting for artificial turf over sod grass and a growing number requesting complete lawn removal. Additionally, there is a notable rise in demand for drought-tolerant plants. The article concludes by encouraging homeowners to embrace these trends in designing their outdoor living spaces to maximize enjoyment of the Minnesota summer.
