Create a Dreamy Backyard Oasis in the City with Expert Help
Transforming a small city backyard into a lush oasis presents a unique design challenge, as exemplified by landscape designer Scot Eckley and interior designer Devin Fitzpatrick's Seattle home. Upon moving in 19 years ago, their backyard was characterized by freeway noise, neighboring views, and a sloped, patchy lawn. Embracing this challenge, they applied their expertise to create a verdant escape, sharing key strategies for maximizing green space and enhancing privacy in urban settings.
One foundational principle for any urban backyard is establishing a strong sense of enclosure. Eckley achieved this by planting tall Leyland cypress hedges, which not only provide visual privacy but also effectively dampen ambient city noise. This dense green barrier is crucial for creating an intimate, secluded atmosphere, making the space feel like a true sanctuary away from the urban hustle. The hedges serve as the backbone of the garden's privacy and tranquility.
To overcome the spatial limitations of a small yard, Eckley implemented a clever division of space using multiple levels and zones. His 1,600-square-foot yard incorporates various features such as raised garden beds, a sunken lounge area complete with a fireplace, and a lawn featuring a daybed. This strategic layering creates distinct 'destinations' within the garden, each with its own focal point, thereby giving the illusion of a much larger, more complex landscape. The fireplace in the retaining wall of the sunken lounge, framed by English ivy and sweet box, adds warmth and softens the modern concrete and steel elements.
Another technique employed is the layering of diverse shades of green. While maintaining a predominantly green palette, the designers introduced variety by selecting plants and shrubs with differing forms and textures. This approach prevents the green-on-green scheme from appearing monotonous, instead creating a rich, tranquil visual tapestry. Occasional white flowers are used sparingly to add subtle highlights without disrupting the serene green theme.
Dedicated relaxation spaces are integral to the backyard's appeal. An arbor, robust enough to support a swinging daybed, offers a cozy retreat for reading or play. Climbing roses are being trained to ascend the structure, promising future blooms and fragrance. This area, furnished with a traditional garden stool, oversized pots, and a stone orb, exemplifies the blend of traditional English garden aesthetics—preferred by Fitzpatrick—with Eckley’s more modern design sensibilities, creating a timeless and inviting space.
The thoughtful integration of hardscaping and softscaping further enhances the garden. Even a modest lawn area acts as a vital green counterpoint to hard surfaces. The steps leading to the lawn feature sleek Corten steel edging, softened by Fitzpatrick's idea of extending grass up the steps, effectively merging their distinct design preferences. This careful balance between natural and man-made elements contributes to the yard's unique character.
Connecting the indoor and outdoor living areas is crucial for maximizing the use of an urban backyard. Eckley and Fitzpatrick installed French doors leading from their family room directly to the lounge area, encouraging frequent outdoor use and allowing the lush garden views to seamlessly extend into the home’s interior. This integration blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor, creating a cohesive living experience.
The dining area evokes a Mediterranean ambiance through carefully chosen elements. A teak dining table and chairs, selected for their subtly European design, can be folded for winter storage. Warm-toned gravel in the dining area not only contributes to the Mediterranean aesthetic but also offers practical benefits as a pervious surface that manages water runoff. An espaliered apple tree and large containers with tomato plants add vertical interest and culinary utility against the hedge backdrop.
Finally, the sense of escape extends to the front of the house. A climbing rose adorns the archway at the entrance, while herbs line the gravel driveway, setting a welcoming and serene tone. The house trim, painted in Benjamin Moore Brewster Gray, complements the overall design, ensuring that the tranquility and carefully cultivated aesthetics begin even before one steps into the backyard, providing a consistent sense of an urban oasis.
