How black grid shower enclosures are still in the frame with consumers
The trend for black grid shower enclosures, inspired by the industrial aesthetic of Crittall doors and windows, continues to maintain its popularity in bathroom design. This style, characterized by simple, strong lines and understated elegance, caters to consumers seeking an industrial edge and a degree of personalization in their bathrooms. The striking contrast provided by black-framed designs has led numerous brands to offer a wide array of grid-style screens and enclosures.
Richard Eaton, product manager for RefleXion Enclosures by PJH, notes that while minimalist, frameless glass screens remain popular, the demand for personalization is driving the evolution of designs, with black framed or paneled looks being particularly favored for industrial-inspired and monochrome interior themes. Jon Walker, head of marketing at The Roxor Group’s Hudson Reed brand, attributes the trend's success to homeowners' increasing willingness to experiment with texture and alternative finishes, highlighting how matt black fixtures create unique accents and complement various bathroom styles. He emphasizes the visual appeal of bold, dark features contrasting with light, bright bathroom spaces.
Black grid shower enclosures also offer a way to define the shower area without completely blending it into the room, providing a sense of separation. Nicholas Cunild, MD for Matki, suggests that designers can make the black grid shower the focal point of the room, pairing it with coordinating black brassware and a monochrome palette. He advises on the strategic use of grout color—white or neutral grout allows the black grid to stand out, whereas black grout on white tiles might detract from it. Alex Cooper, sales director at Shower Lab, observes that consumers opt for black grid designs to achieve a bold, iconic look that harmonizes with contemporary bathroom furniture colors, including black, brushed gold, and copper. He notes a shift in design philosophy where the shower is increasingly becoming a central design element rather than just a functional necessity.
Eileen Slattery, marketing manager for Merlyn, cautions designers to treat black shower screens as statement pieces, recommending complementary black accessories and simple tile designs for a cohesive aesthetic. She advises pairing them with minimalist décor to foster a relaxing atmosphere. Slattery also stresses the importance of researching material finishes, recommending durable coatings like anodized matt black for longevity, as painted or powdered finishes can chip over time. Concealed fixings and toughened safety glass are also vital for enduring design. Manufacturers are capitalizing on this demand by offering diverse options, from wet room panels to full enclosures with sliding doors. David Osborne, CEO of Roman, anticipates the black grid trend will persist in both retail and hospitality sectors, driven by a shift away from chrome and clear glass towards textured and printed glass options.
