Bathroom design: Clever shower designs for awkward spaces

Designing showers for bathrooms with non-standard layouts presents a common challenge, necessitating specialized solutions and strategic approaches to integrate around difficult architectural features. This exploration highlights effective options and essential design considerations for such projects. Lorraine Walsh, a bespoke design consultant at Merlyn, notes the extensive range of specialists and product solutions available to maximize space in uniquely shaped bathrooms. These include custom bath screens, wetroom panels, and wall profiles, along with various hinges and handles, providing designers the flexibility to craft functional and stylish showering experiences in areas traditionally deemed unsuitable. Walsh emphasizes the importance of collaborating with dedicated bespoke design teams experienced in developing tailored solutions, whether it involves adjusting the height of a shower door, navigating dwarf walls, or incorporating specific angled cuts. Comprehensive evaluation of all shower space and layout options during the initial design phase, prior to any construction, is critical. This planning is especially important when wood elements like door frames or beams are present, as glass should not sit flush with wood due to moisture-induced rot; a 10-15mm gap is recommended to prevent issues. Max Finaldi, MD of The Shower Lab, concurs that upfront communication regarding quirky features is essential. Accurate information about elements such as the precise angle of a sloped ceiling or limited floor space is crucial to avoid complications in the design and manufacturing process, preventing ill-fitting or leak-prone installations. The Shower Lab's View Collection offers customizable shower spaces to meet client needs, particularly for sloped ceilings, where recess showers like the View 05 or View 03 are popular. Angled glass cuts allow seamless integration with sloping ceilings, while hinged doors offer both privacy and effective splash protection. For specific requirements like single notches or cut-outs to accommodate beams, a fixed screen like the View 01 might be suitable, especially when good accessibility is a priority. Natalie Paley, national sales manager for retail and merchant at Coram UK, points out that custom-made enclosures ensure an exact fit in spaces where conventional showers cannot be accommodated, such as attics, lofts, under-stair areas, converted garages, or basements. These bespoke solutions can incorporate precise dimensions without compromising style or quality. Coram UK's Sealskin duka range offers tailor-made enclosures, manufactured within 4-6 weeks, to perfectly fit any environment. Wetroom floors also offer significant advantages for unusually shaped rooms. Trimmable floor formers, such as Impey’s Aqua-Dec EasyFit, can be cut to adapt to room dimensions while maintaining proper drainage, eliminating the need for a shower tray and enabling greater design freedom. Each Sealskin duka enclosure is custom-manufactured to order, providing millimeter-precision cuts based on supplied dimensions, empowering designers to explore innovative layouts, shapes, and sizes, even for challenging installations like those under sloping roofs or around boxed-in piping. Bev Brown, MD of Lakes, suggests bifold, quadrant, and corner entry showers as excellent options for maximizing space in tight bathrooms, particularly when paired with wall-hung toilets and basins. For sloped ceilings and beams, reduced-height shower enclosures offer a practical solution. Pivot showers, featuring a swivel hinge mechanism between the door and frame, provide full access without requiring extensive clearance for door swing. Walk-in or walk-through showers with single glass panels are another effective design for awkwardly shaped rooms, offering an unobtrusive style and contributing to an airy feel. In spaces with limited natural light, such as loft conversions, optimizing natural light is key; incorporating skylights above the shower can enhance brightness while maintaining privacy. LED lighting within shower enclosures can also create a softer, more relaxing ambiance. Paul Bailey, leader of product management at Lixil EMENA and Grohe UK, highlights concealed shower valves as ideal space-saving solutions for compact or complex bathrooms. By housing the mechanics behind the wall, these valves provide a sleek, contemporary finish and offer greater design flexibility, eliminating the hose length limitations of exposed systems. This allows for increased personalization and the creation of truly bespoke showering spaces. #BathroomDesign #AwkwardSpaces #BespokeShowers #ShowerEnclosures #Wetrooms #SpaceSaving #CustomSolutions #Merlyn #TheShowerLab #BathroomDesign #AwkwardSpaces #BespokeShowers #ShowerEnclosures #Wetrooms #SpaceSaving #CustomSolutions #Merlyn #TheShowerLab
