We Tested Best LED Light Strips for Illuminating Any Location, See Our Favorites
LED light strips are versatile lighting solutions comprising long circuit boards with surface-mount device light-emitting diodes (SMD LEDs), suitable for various applications such as recessed lighting, television backlighting, and under-cabinet illumination. Many models integrate with smart-home systems for enhanced convenience and customization. To identify the most effective options, an evaluation was conducted on 10 popular LED lighting strips, involving hands-on tests and expert consultations.
Each product was assessed based on ease of use, aesthetic appeal of colors and modes, and the value of special features. The Govee RGB 32.8-Foot LED Strip Lights were recognized as the 'Best Overall' due to their straightforward installation and operation, sufficient brightness for task lighting, and reasonable pricing. Other top selections included the Nexillumi RGB 50-Foot LED Strip Lights for 'Best Bang for the Buck,' the Pangton Villa 6.56-Foot LED Strip Lights for TV as the 'Best TV Backlighting,' and the VyanLight Motion-Sensor LED Lights for 'Best Motion-Activated' capabilities.
Additional recommendations comprised the Govee RGB Smart Car LED Strip Lights as the 'Best For Car,' the Daybetter Bluetooth 100-Foot LED Strip Lights for 'Best For Ceiling,' the Tenmiro RGB 100-Foot Color-Changing LED Strip Lights for 'Best Colorful' effects, and the Daybetter Waterproof IR 32.8-Foot LED Strip Lights as an 'Also Consider' option. Two products, the Philips Hue Bluetooth Smart Lightstrip and the Monster 6.5-Foot Multicolor LED Light, did not meet the criteria due to connectivity issues and poor adherence, respectively.
The testing methodology involved installing the LED strips in relevant environments such as kitchens, offices, cars, and around televisions. Features and functionality were tested over 2.5 weeks, including setting lighting schedules, creating themes, and using the lights in everyday scenarios. Products were rated on installation, illumination, and durability, with scores on a 0-4 scale determining awards.
Key considerations for selecting LED light strips include their intended location (e.g., water resistance for patios, dimmer compatibility for bedrooms), length (ranging from 1 to over 50 feet, with options for cutting or connecting), and flexibility (some can bend up to 90 degrees, while higher-power strips may be more rigid). Brightness, measured in lumens, is correlated with LED density, typically available in standard density (SD) at 30 LEDs/meter or high density (HD) at 60 LEDs/meter. Color and color temperature (measured in Kelvin) are important for aesthetic consistency, with experts recommending 2700K or 3000K for a warm white appearance. Wattage indicates energy consumption, with LED lights being significantly more energy-efficient than incandescent or CFL/fluorescent bulbs. Operation methods have evolved from hardwired systems to include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and remote controls, enabling advanced functions like music syncing, scheduling, and voice commands via smart-home devices.
Common inquiries address the safety of LED strips (safe when installed per instructions), their operational duration (can run for hours without excessive heat), power requirements (most need to be plugged in, though battery-operated options exist), dimmer compatibility (most are compatible with dimmer switches), and ambient lighting applications (under cabinets, behind mirrors, around furniture). Proper disposal involves taking them to local recycling centers. LED strip lights are durable, with a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours, equivalent to 10-20 years of use.
