A Brick Red Island Replaced the In-the-Way Wall Cabinets in This Copenhagen Kitchen
Céline Hallas, a design enthusiast in Copenhagen, transformed her small city-apartment kitchen by replacing a problematic countertop layout with a central brick-red island. Previously, her kitchen featured a long stretch of countertop, which she referred to as a “highway” due to the empty space it created in the middle of the room and the difficulty it posed in accessing the window for ventilation. Despite attempting to enhance the space over seven years with blue-green walls and emerald cubbies, Hallas found the kitchen lacked personality and functionality, remaining a "white, glossy kitchen with no personality and a highway in the middle."
In 2022, Hallas decided to undertake a significant renovation, opting to remove the existing setup and install a new kitchen using Reform’s Basis line. The key change was the introduction of a large central island, which not only became a focal point but also improved accessibility to the windows, offering views of the street's oldest house from the 1600s. The island provided ample storage for cookware and dishes, allowing Hallas to remove previously installed cabinets on the kitchen's crooked walls, thereby reducing visual clutter and creating a more open feel.
For the color palette, Hallas chose brick-hued linoleum cupboards and Calacatta Viola marble counters. This choice was a deliberate departure from her usual preference for blue, as she sought to challenge her own design instincts and explore the value of other colors. She admits to being initially nervous about the bold red choice, given that her professional work and Instagram presence are centered around color. To balance the intensity of the red, she incorporated white fronts beneath the cooktop, which seamlessly blend with the gray walls. The ceiling was painted in a warm camel tone, intended to enhance the coziness of the space. The renovation successfully created a more functional, aesthetically pleasing, and inviting kitchen that now feels like a “breath of fresh air.”
