New on The Scene: Storage Furniture That Busts Clutter With the Flick of a Curtain
Designers Stephanie Betesh and Nicholas Steigmann have introduced Riffmade, a new line of storage furniture aimed at addressing the challenges of open-concept living, particularly in small spaces. Their innovation stems from a personal experience with a visually cluttered kitchen in a Brooklyn apartment. Riffmade's collection utilizes the concept of integrating curtains into furniture pieces to conceal clutter and offer versatile functionality.
The genesis of Riffmade was a freestanding kitchen island featuring a butcher-block top for food preparation and built-in curtains designed to hide pots, pans, and spices. This initial design served as the foundation for a broader collection, emphasizing the creation of a sense of home within daily routines. The collection currently includes two sizes of the island, a side table, and a desk, all distinguished by their use of fabric curtains.
Betesh and Steigmann highlight several advantages of using curtains in their designs. They note that curtains add warmth to a space, are lightweight, which simplifies shipping and usage, and offer a new medium for textile expression. Unlike traditional doors that swing open, curtains provide a more fluid and tactile transition, allowing for a subtle shift in the state of a room. Furthermore, a specially designed track system enables users to easily swap out fabrics, with ten options currently available, offering flexibility for aesthetic changes.
The furniture's design promotes adaptability. For instance, a desk can seamlessly transition from a workstation during the day to a console at night by simply drawing a curtain to hide a monitor. Similarly, a nightstand can serve a dual purpose as a charging hub. All pieces in the collection are crafted from white oak in North Carolina, with meticulous attention to internal organization. The Hearth Island, for example, features shelves of varying heights to accommodate different tools and devices, along with a vertical slot for cutting boards and baking sheets.
The Veil Desk, another prominent piece, incorporates a two-tiered design. This allows users to tuck away a monitor behind a curtain after work hours, revealing a display surface for decorative items like ceramics. The Hearthlet Island is a more compact version of the Hearth Island, offering similar functionalities such as a towel rod and an optional spice rack, but with a simpler four-shelf interior, ideal for smaller kitchens. The Nook Table is presented as the most versatile item, suitable for use as a side table, nightstand, or even wall-mounted as a floating shelf in various rooms, including entryways, bathrooms, and kitchen niches, aiming to bring a sense of order to any space.
