DIY striped walls transformed this space into a chic and calming breakfast nook

Interior designer Drew Michael Scott, known as Lone Fox, transformed his breakfast nook with a DIY striped wall treatment, demonstrating an accessible yet sophisticated approach to home decoration. This article details the three key steps involved in replicating his elegant striped walls, offering practical advice for readers to undertake similar projects. The first step emphasizes the importance of starting with a well-chosen base color. Scott used Farrow and Ball's Dimity as his base, highlighting that this initial shade is crucial for the overall aesthetic of the striped pattern. The base color and the subsequent stripe color should be considered a cohesive pair, working together to create a harmonious and calming effect, rather than a bold or overwhelming one. This stage involves ensuring the walls are already painted in the desired foundational hue. The second step focuses on applying masking tape to create sharp, uniform lines for the stripes. Scott recommends using Scotch Blue Painters Tape for general application, but advises using Scotch Delicate Tape if the base coat of paint is fresh, to prevent damage upon removal. To ensure consistent spacing between stripes, he devised a clever method: using small pieces of tape as spacers above each main tape line. This technique guarantees precision and evenness throughout the design, crucial for a professional-looking finish. The final step involves painting the stripes. Scott initially planned for only a couple of stripes but was so pleased with the ease and aesthetic outcome that he decided to cover the entire wall diagonally. He suggests applying a base coat over the taped areas before painting the stripe color. This acts as a sealant, preventing the stripe color from bleeding under the tape and ensuring crisp lines. After the base coat dries, the chosen stripe color (in his case, Oxford Stone by Farrow & Ball) is applied in one or two layers. Once dry, the tape is carefully peeled off to reveal the finished striped pattern. It is vital to check the paint's texture before removing the tape to avoid smudging or imperfections. The article also includes Scott's broader advice for styling a cozy breakfast nook, extending beyond just the wall treatment. He suggests using calming colors like soft neutrals, warm greys, muted pastels, and earth tones to create a grounding and inviting atmosphere. Ambient lighting, such as table lamps, pendant lights, or wall sconces, is recommended to foster a soothing environment. Additionally, light, sheer curtains are advised to filter sunlight gently, adding an ethereal and intimate feel to the space. Scott's overall approach combines muted colors with dark wood accents and antique pieces, creating a homely yet sophisticated aesthetic. The article concludes by reinforcing that such a transformative and elegant design is surprisingly easy to achieve through DIY methods, making it an ideal project for enhancing any living space. #DIY #InteriorDesign #HomeDecoration #StripedWalls #BreakfastNook #PaintProject #LoneFox #MutedColors #CozySpaces #DIY #InteriorDesign #HomeDecoration #StripedWalls #BreakfastNook #PaintProject #LoneFox #MutedColors #CozySpaces
