At This Virginia Home, High-Gloss Emerald Green Is a Neutral Color
This article highlights the innovative interior design approach used in a Richmond, Virginia, home, focusing on how a bold color palette, particularly a vivacious emerald green library, redefines traditional neutrals. The homeowners, empty nesters downsizing from a stately Georgian, sought a bolder aesthetic for their new Regency-style residence. They provided interior designer Suzanne Kasler and architectural designer Carter Skinner with a strict color scheme of black, white, raspberry, and brown, with the green library being the single exception.
The design process involved creating a courtyard-centric, O-shaped floor plan that maximizes natural light, with 11 pairs of arched French doors opening primary living spaces to an inner oasis. This architectural foundation, characterized by wonderful proportions and a beautiful flow, allowed for creative freedom in interior decoration. Kasler embraced Regency style, appreciating its classic symmetry, graphic impact, Hollywood glam indulgences, and touches of gold, which she believes give it a modern yet traditional feel. The challenge was to integrate the specified colors and Regency details into a sophisticated and timeless design.
The living room serves as a serene counterpoint with refined neutrals, providing a calm backdrop to the bolder patterns and colors in adjacent areas. The design incorporates black doors and leopard-print upholstery, creating a symphony of elegant creams and platinum. Kasler emphasizes the versatility of Regency style, allowing for a seamless blend of new and old elements, such as modern mirrors with antique consoles, to add depth and dimension.
The library, a central feature, is anything but a traditional hushed space. Kasler delivered an “emerald explosion,” carefully selecting an intense shade of green to match the boldness of the raspberry and black used elsewhere. The room features an ornate cornice, matching velvet sofas, and a casual seagrass rug. Shelves are filled with the couple’s extensive collection of decorative arts books. A unique element is a hidden doorway disguised as a bookcase, leading to the husband's office.
In the family room, a Casa Branca floral pattern adorns upholstery and curtains, contrasting with a geometric rug and glossy brown walls and ceiling. The interior drama is balanced by the tranquility of the central courtyard, designed by landscape architect Chip Callaway. Inspired by historic Tidewater Virginia gardens, the courtyard features an orderly parterre kitchen garden with a limited green and white palette. A Skinner-designed garden folly is strategically placed on axis with the kitchen window, creating a picturesque view. This classical balance between landscape and architecture, according to Kasler, provides opportunities to push design and color boundaries.
