Best of Design 2025: A Mid-Century Modern Home That Blends the Indoors and Outdoors

A Mid-Century Modern home in Squirrel Hill North underwent a comprehensive, down-to-the-studs renovation, orchestrated by designer Heather Wildman of Wildman Chalmers Design. The homeowners, who wished to remain anonymous, were familiar with renovation processes, but the unique approach taken by Wildman set this project apart. During their initial site meeting, Wildman insisted on climbing onto the flat roof with the clients to identify the optimal location for an upper-story addition. This led to the strategic placement of a new primary suite that offered a treetop view of Negley Avenue, which subsequently became the anchor for the home’s indoor-meets-outdoor design ethos. The transformation garnered significant recognition, earning the Best Renovated Home award for 2025 from the Best of Design judges. Crystal Knapik, a project designer at Christner Architects, praised the renovation for its complete and cohesive execution, noting the consistent quality between the exterior and interior work. The original property, described by Wildman as a "time-warp house," featured outdated elements such as shaggy landscaping, parquet floors, Hollywood-style vanity mirrors, a sunken living room, and a small, round kitchen island. The goal was to modernize and expand the space for empty-nester clients without compromising warmth or invitingness. The design strategy revolved around integrating nature. Wildman and her team, including Chad Chalmers, Kelsey Thomas, and Maggie Smoller, maintained the home’s Mid-Century Modern architectural framework while reimagining almost every other aspect. A neutral color palette, accented with mossy green and rich textures, was selected to echo the surrounding landscape. This is prominently displayed in the living room, which features cream-and-caramel-hued couches, a custom upholstered wall, and a green stone wall that extends from behind the gas fireplace through floor-to-ceiling windows to the patio, effectively blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Natural light was a critical design element, enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection and creating an airy ambiance. In the kitchen, where original low ceilings were a challenge, Wildman introduced a popped-up ceiling and clerestory windows. These additions provided increased height and light, illuminating the walnut cabinetry and marble countertops, and offering views of the treetops. The adjacent dining room features matching oversized windows that overlook a walled garden designed by landscape architect Jack LaQuatra, further reinforcing the natural integration. LaQuatra's landscaping played a vital role in softening the home's rigid lines and its painted-brick and wood-paneled exterior, introducing seasonal color variations. The landscaping also frames an outdoor living area off the living room, complete with a covered patio, a plunge pool, and a custom metalwork water feature. Despite the allure of the first floor and gardens, the clients consider the upper-story addition their favorite part of the home. This new level, accessed by a walnut-paneled staircase, houses the primary bedroom, an ensuite bathroom, a sitting room, and a laundry room. The design maintained continuity with the first floor through repeated colors, textures, more floor-to-ceiling windows, silk wallpaper, and a fluted limestone wall in the bathroom. The clients expressed immense satisfaction, stating that Wildman’s vision exceeded their expectations. They appreciated her deep understanding of their lifestyle and spatial needs. The renovation, which spanned two and a half years and occurred during the pandemic, faced challenges such as supply-chain disruptions, but these were consistently met with inventive solutions, such as commissioning a custom steel pool when a standard fiberglass one was unavailable. The collaboration between the design team and the trusting clients ultimately resulted in a highly successful and acclaimed home renovation. #MidCenturyModern #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #OutdoorLiving #PittsburghDesign #WildmanChalmersDesign #ArchitecturalDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #MidCenturyModern #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #OutdoorLiving #PittsburghDesign #WildmanChalmersDesign #ArchitecturalDesign #LandscapeArchitecture
