You'll Thank Yourself Next Year If You Take This Holiday Decor Storage Advice

The festive period, marked by holiday decorations and celebrations, inevitably concludes with the task of packing everything away. Rather than hastily stowing items, an organized approach can significantly streamline the process for the following year. A crucial first step involves decluttering: assessing each item and deciding whether it is worth keeping. Any decorations that are no longer loved or were unused during the season should be considered for donation, preventing unnecessary clutter and storage burdens. Once the selection is refined, the next step is to choose a dedicated storage location. Garages, basements, sheds, or attics are ideal for seasonal items, keeping them out of the way for the majority of the year. If these options are unavailable, less-frequently used spaces like guest bedrooms or under-stair closets can serve the purpose. Separating indoor and outdoor decorations can also optimize space and accessibility. For convenient, portable storage, a wheeled garment rack can transform into a "Christmas closet." Lights and garlands can be hung using pant and belt/tie hangers, then covered with garment bags, with bins stacked at the bottom for additional items. This method, as suggested by organizing expert Janna Lufkin, helps maintain the shape of faux garlands and prevents tree skirts from wrinkling by hanging them instead of folding them into bins. Artificial trees require careful storage to preserve their shape and longevity. A zippered tree cover is recommended for long-term protection. After removing all decorations, the tree branches should be folded, and the tree placed upright in the cover, preferably in a closet. Storing it upright prevents crushing, which can occur if the tree is laid down. The original packaging is often unreliable due to its fragility, especially in humid conditions. A quick DIY alternative involves covering the tree with an extra-large trash bag or plastic wrap to shield it from dust, to be carefully removed when the next holiday season arrives. Ornaments, often cherished and delicate, need protective storage. While original boxes offer some safety, they are not space-efficient. Specialized ornament boxes with dividers are ideal, or DIY dividers can be created from cardboard, such as grid inserts from wine cases. Dish-packing foam can be used to cushion individual ornaments. Craft boxes with compartments are suitable for smaller ornaments, and delicate pieces can be wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap before storage. Managing wreaths and garlands properly prevents tangling and damage. Wreaths should be stored in canvas bags or latched plastic cases, especially those with intricate details. For multiple wreaths, sturdy wall hooks or large S-hooks on a closet rod provide an effective hanging solution. Similar to artificial trees, wreaths can be wrapped in garbage bags or plastic for dust protection. Garlands, prone to tangling, benefit from being looped like a hose, secured with hook-and-loop tape, and stored in a tote. Thin garlands, like beads, should be folded and sealed in clear plastic bags. Faux garlands can be hung on sturdy wood pants hangers to maintain their form. Christmas lights are notorious for tangling. Long strands can be wrapped around plastic wind-up wheels or holders, while shorter sets can be coiled around cardboard pieces or sturdy hangers. Coiling lights into long ovals and securing them with cable ties before hanging prevents knots. Fairy lights can be wrapped around empty paper towel rolls, with the plug tucked inside. Holiday gift wrap supplies, including paper, bags, bows, and tags, can be organized in an all-in-one organizer bag or an under-bed bin. For limited closet space, a back-of-the-door rack with customizable compartments is useful, or a mobile cart with a wrapping paper attachment provides flexibility. Fragile holiday dishware should be stored separately to prevent breakage and avoid cluttering everyday kitchen spaces. Quilted boxes are ideal for plates, and dividers can organize wine glasses and mugs. Large platters should be carefully wrapped before storage. Lastly, a dedicated tool kit for holiday decorating, stocked with essentials like batteries, suction hooks, florist wire, clippers, a light tester, and replacement bulbs, ensures readiness for any decorating task. This systematic approach transforms post-holiday packing from a chore into an efficient and protective process for all holiday items. #HolidayStorage #HomeOrganization #SeasonalDecorations #ChristmasDecor #Decluttering #StorageHacks #HomeDecor #OrganizingTips #GarlandStorage #HolidayStorage #HomeOrganization #SeasonalDecorations #ChristmasDecor #Decluttering #StorageHacks #HomeDecor #OrganizingTips #GarlandStorage
