How To Create More Closet Storage, According To A Professional Organizer

Many individuals often find themselves struggling with insufficient closet space, even those with seemingly large walk-in closets, especially if the space is shared. A well-organized and spacious closet can significantly enhance a home's value, as noted by Homes. Beyond monetary value, an upgraded closet can also lead to increased happiness in one's living space, with a survey by the National Association of Realtors Research Group indicating that 59% of respondents felt happier and 72% desired to be home more after a closet upgrade. This article, featuring insights from Kirsten Fisher, a certified professional organizer and founder of Imagine Home Organization, provides practical strategies to maximize closet storage without necessarily undertaking extensive renovations. One fundamental principle for optimizing closet space is to utilize the full vertical area. While horizontal storage is often the initial focus, considering the space above and below the existing rod and shelf can dramatically increase capacity. For instance, the area below the main hanging rod is ideal for shoe shelving, drawer units, or even an additional rod for hanging shorter items, effectively doubling hanging space. The space above can be used for stacking sweater bins, memorabilia boxes, or tall totes and handbags, particularly if these items feature open fronts for easy access. These vertical additions, such as extra rods or storage boxes, are often easy to install and relatively inexpensive, offering significant storage gains with minor adjustments. Another overlooked area for storage expansion is the closet door. By thinking creatively, a closet door can be transformed into valuable storage real estate. Fisher suggests using door-mounted storage solutions, such as the Elfa door rack system, to store frequently accessed items like shoes, clutches, cleaning supplies, or pantry items. This strategy not only maximizes an otherwise unused surface but also improves accessibility to daily essentials, making life more convenient. Many door storage systems are designed for easy, tool-free installation, often simply hooking over the top of the door. Expanding storage beyond the confines of the traditional closet is also an effective strategy. This approach involves recognizing that storage doesn't have to be limited to a dedicated closet space. Incorporating furniture pieces like pantry cabinets in a kitchen's unused corner, wardrobes in spare bedrooms for seasonal clothing, or storage benches at the foot of a bed for linens can create significant additional storage. This method allows for seamless integration with the home's aesthetic and can even involve repurposing existing furniture, making it a budget-friendly option. These external storage solutions are particularly useful for items not needed on a daily basis, keeping them accessible yet out of the primary closet, which can then be reserved for daily-use items. Strategic organization is crucial for maintaining an efficient closet. This involves making conscious decisions about what items genuinely need to be stored in the main closet and what can be relocated. While sentimental items or clothes that are not the right size might be difficult to part with, they don't necessarily need prime closet space. Fisher recommends moving infrequently used items to alternative locations, such as a basement, laundry room, or garage, or storing them in bins on high shelves. This prevents the primary closet from becoming cluttered with items that are rarely accessed, thereby improving daily convenience and reducing chaos. The minor inconvenience of retrieving an item from another room periodically is often outweighed by the benefit of a more organized main closet. Finally, the most impactful way to create more storage is through decluttering. Regardless of how many organizational tools or techniques are employed, there is a finite amount of space in any home. Overstuffing spaces with unnecessary items will always hinder the creation of a streamlined environment. Fisher emphasizes that decluttering not only frees up physical space but also saves time and energy that might otherwise be spent searching for misplaced items or repurchasing things that are already owned but cannot be found. While decluttering personal items like clothing can be challenging, starting with less sentimental spaces like storage closets can yield immediate results, creating space for essential items like shoes or extra linens. By eliminating items that are not valued or used, homeowners can effectively organize and make space for what truly matters. #ClosetOrganization #HomeStorageSolutions #ProfessionalOrganizerTips #VerticalStorage #DoorStorage #FurnitureStorage #Decluttering #HomeImprovement #SpaceMaximization #ClosetOrganization #HomeStorageSolutions #ProfessionalOrganizerTips #VerticalStorage #DoorStorage #FurnitureStorage #Decluttering #HomeImprovement #SpaceMaximization
