I Didn’t Think I Needed a Closet System to Get Organized Until I Tried Pottery Barn’s Version
The author shares their experience with installing and reviewing Pottery Barn's newly re-released Hold Everything Essential Closet system in their Brooklyn rental carriage house. Despite the house's charming quirks, the unexpectedly spacious bedroom closets posed an organizational challenge, which previous attempts with bins failed to address effectively. The Hold Everything system, originally launched by Williams Sonoma in 1983 and later adopted by Pottery Barn, is presented as an ideal solution between off-the-shelf and custom closet organization options. Its modular design allows for customization, catering to both reach-in and walk-in closets with varying widths and component choices, including basic shelves, shelves with rods, shoe racks, dresser drawers, and cabinets. The system features a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing white powder-coated steel for brackets, posts, and rods, and white-finished MDF for shelves, drawers, and cabinets.
The author opted for an 8-foot-wide reach-in system with multiple shelves, rods, and two 4-drawer dressers to maximize storage and eliminate the need for a dresser in the already tight bedroom space. The cost of these systems, ranging from $763 to $4,305 depending on style and size, is noted to be comparable to other high-quality options and offers a more upscale finish than budget alternatives. The installation process, undertaken by the author and their husband, is detailed as a significant undertaking, involving managing 31 boxes of carefully packed components. The initial stage included unboxing, which alone took 1.5 to 2 hours, and dealing with a substantial amount of packaging material. The authors also had to contend with the existing makeshift closet system, pipes, and molding in their century-old building, requiring improvisation like raising the floor with wood to secure the posts. Securing the posts and drawers was the most time-consuming part, taking approximately three hours to ensure they were level and secure.
Despite the challenges, the author highly recommends the Hold Everything system, especially for new constructions, gut renovations, or individuals seeking to maximize hidden storage. The system's durability, sturdy construction from solid, coated MDF and metal frames, and the ease with which shelves can be moved around are highlighted as key advantages. The hardware and anchors are described as user-friendly once the process is understood. The author concludes that while professional installation is advisable for complex spaces or those with budget flexibility, two able-bodied individuals can manage the installation over a weekend in simpler, newer homes. The ultimate benefit noted is a renewed motivation to keep clothes organized, a significant improvement over their previous chaotic storage habits. The system's versatility also suggests its potential use in other areas beyond clothing, such as linen or craft closets.
