This Art Deco-inspired IKEA hack using BILLY bookcases makes the perfect surround for this fireplace
This article details a DIY IKEA hack project that transforms standard BILLY bookcases into a bespoke, Art Deco-inspired fireplace surround with integrated shelving. Home renovator Melanie Boyden initiated the project in her Brighton home after an extensive renovation that reconfigured her living room's floorplan. The original fireplace was no longer central to the new layout, and quotes to relocate it or build custom cabinetry were prohibitively expensive.
Boyden decided to install a biofuel burner, which eliminated the need for a flue or chimney, allowing for a central fireplace without the complex structural modifications. Inspired by examples of bespoke cabinetry made from BILLY bookcases, she embarked on a DIY solution. The project involved acquiring six 15 3/4-inch wide BILLY units, OXBERG doors for the lower cabinet sections, an MDF sheet for creating arched shapes, trim for a built-in appearance, and strip wood to achieve a ribbed effect on the doors. An old kitchen worktop was repurposed as a hearth, and a large shelf served as a mantelpiece.
The construction process began with assembling the BILLY units and securely fastening them to the wall. Boyden then measured and cut the MDF sheet using a jigsaw to form circular arches that extended from the top of the bookcases to the ceiling, creating a seamless, built-in look. For the OXBERG doors, she carefully measured the recessed panels and used a miter saw to cut strip wood to create the ribbed texture. Additional trim was cut to frame the doors and the overall bookcase structure.
After gluing all components, caulk was applied to fill any gaps, and skirting boards were installed at the base of the cabinets to conceal the bottom of the bookcases. The entire structure was then primed with Zinsser shellac, an industry-favorite primer known for its adherence to various surfaces without sanding. Subsequently, three coats of Valspar 'Thames Fog' paint, a smoky sage green, were applied to the bookcases, trim, and doors. The painting process, including drying and curing times, extended the project duration to approximately four weeks.
Boyden faced challenges during the project, particularly with precisely cutting the trim around the ceiling coving and accurately creating the arches in the MDF, for which she ingeniously used a pizza tray as a template. Despite these difficulties, the finished product integrated seamlessly into her living room, enhancing its aesthetic with a unique Art Deco flair. To further refine the fireplace's appearance, brick slips were later added around the firebox, providing a more authentic and complete look.
The project not only resulted in a stylish and functional storage solution but also yielded significant cost savings, estimated at £11,000, by avoiding professional services. Boyden expressed pride in her accomplishment and increased confidence in her DIY abilities, although she anticipates taking on smaller projects in the future. The project successfully demonstrates how readily available and affordable IKEA furniture can be transformed into custom, high-end-looking pieces through creative design and DIY effort.
