Sea green tiles, ribbed glass, and rattan turn a beige bath into a tranquil escape
This article details the transformation of a dated primary bathroom in Milton into a spa-like retreat, executed by designer Desiree Burns of Desiree Burns Interiors. The renovation focused on achieving a tranquil aesthetic while keeping budget constraints in mind by retaining existing plumbing fixture locations. The primary objective was to convert the cramped space into a more open and functional wet room.
The renovation began by replacing a restrictive stall shower with a spacious walk-in, curbless shower and upgrading a bulky, deck-mounted tub with a sleek freestanding model, all without altering the main plumbing lines. The toilet was also replaced with a more contemporary unit, and the double vanity was upgraded, with their positions largely maintained to minimize costs.
A key design element for the vanity area involved an unfinished, off-the-shelf double vanity from Signature Hardware, which was given a clear-coat finish to mimic white oak. It was then fitted with unlacquered polished brass handles from CB2. To add visual interest and reduce tiling costs, shiplap was applied to the vanity wall. A white-quartz countertop was installed, extending up the wall to form a seamless backsplash, where elegant brass cross-handle faucets were wall-mounted to provide a refined, custom appearance.
Above the vanity, lozenge-shaped rattan mirrors from Anthropologie were introduced. These mirrors serve to add a warm, coastal touch and visually soften the sharp angles of the pitched ceiling, while also echoing the curvilinear form of the new bathtub. Due to the ceiling's pitch, it was impractical to install individual light fixtures next to or above each mirror. Instead, a single Kelly Wearstler sconce was centrally placed on the wall, creating a linear rhythm that complemented the shiplap.
For the shower area, a frameless, ribbed-glass enclosure was installed to define the space while maintaining an open feel. The existing window in the shower was enlarged and fitted with frosted glass, enhancing privacy while still allowing ample natural light to fill the room.
The shower walls were clad with glazed ceramic tiles featuring an undulating surface, chosen for their mix of sea-glass green hues, which became a focal point of the bathroom. The floor was laid with honed terrazzo tiles, whose pebble-like appearance further contributed to the coastal theme. An Eny Lee Parker x Mitzi sconce, characterized by a nautical yet glamorous design, was added to elevate the overall ambiance of the space.
