A family’s COVID basement remodel includes a playhouse, exercise studio, and home theater
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted Linh Hoang and Kira Sevene to accelerate their plans for finishing the basement of their Lexington home to create family-friendly entertainment spaces for their three children, aged 3, 6, and 8. The primary motivation was to provide more room for their children to play while schools were closed and to convert an upstairs playroom into a remote-school classroom. The couple collaborated with Nick Vercollone of Highline Construction to bring their vision to life.
The renovation incorporated several imaginative features designed to cater to the children's interests and the family's needs during the pandemic. A standout element is a cedar-shingled playhouse, complete with a Dutch door and functioning lights, which cleverly integrates into the space by hiding two support columns and the underside of the staircase. Its sloped roof contributes to a cozy interior, envisioned by Sevene as a camping spot for the kids. Adjacent to the playhouse, a dedicated exercise studio was created with a birch forest wallpaper mural, featuring a specialized vinyl dance floor. This was specifically designed to accommodate virtual karate and dance classes, with Wi-Fi upgrades ensuring stable connectivity for online tournaments.
The play area also includes ample floor space for a train table, various toys, a foosball table, and a Ping-Pong table, complete with monogrammed paddles. These additions were intended to provide engaging physical activities for the children during lockdown and to encourage social interaction with friends once restrictions eased. While the 8-year-old quickly embraced these activities, the younger children are still developing the necessary coordination.
Separated from the exercise studio by a glass wall, a kitchenette and a dining/craft table offer additional functional space. A custom-built, sliding barn door, designed by Highline Construction, conceals recessed toy storage and leads to a home theater. This home theater boasts a 10-foot-tall, built-in movie screen, chosen by Hoang with the philosophy of investing in the screen while acknowledging the frequent need for projector upgrades due to rapidly changing technology. The theater's acoustics are enhanced by patterned vinyl ceiling tiles, and its red carpet and lounge-style sectional seating evoke a classic movie theater ambiance, promoting family snuggling. Prior to the pandemic, the family rarely watched TV, but the new home theater established Friday and Sunday as regular family movie nights, strengthening their shared enjoyment of the space.
