Inside “Drag Race’’ Icon Detox’s Home Renovation Disaster

Detox, a prominent figure from *RuPaul’s Drag Race* Season 5 and *All-Stars* Season 2, shares her challenging experience as a first-time homebuyer undergoing a major home renovation in Chicago. She purchased a 2,100 square-foot property in 2017, drawn to its unique 1970s and 1980s maximalist aesthetic, featuring 1970s mirrors, a large second living room, stucco walls, an indoor pool, and a sauna. While she initially saw the property as a dream, she recognized the need for significant updates, particularly in the primary bedroom and bathroom. The renovation project, which began in spring 2020, aimed to modernize the primary suite. Detox envisioned new hardwood floors, a custom closet system for her extensive vintage fur collection, and a luxurious bathroom equipped with a custom vanity, a deep soaking tub, and a high-end Toto Neorest toilet. She hired a contractor based on positive recommendations and reviews, expecting a smooth process towards achieving her desired functional and glamorous space. However, the project quickly turned into a "nightmare." The contractor became unresponsive and eventually disappeared mid-pandemic in 2020, leaving the renovation incomplete. Two years later, the work remains unfinished. The custom closets, a key feature for Detox's wardrobe, were poorly installed with difficult-to-open doors and positioned directly over heating and cooling vents, rendering them either too cold or too hot depending on the season. The luxurious Toto toilet was installed off-center on custom tiles and developed a continuous flushing problem. Additionally, electrical outlets were placed inconveniently beneath vanity mirrors, distorting the appearance of the marble sinks, and drainage issues in the tub caused bubbles to escape through the overflow protector. These issues led to half the house being without power and the bathroom lacking hot water for six months, forcing Detox to temporarily relocate to her sister's home. Detox offers cautionary advice for other first-time homebuyers. She emphasizes the importance of being realistic about the limitations of older homes, citing issues like subpar wiring that prevented the installation of a ceiling-mounted flat-screen TV due to safety concerns and high costs associated with upgrading the electrical system. She also advises prospective renovators to thoroughly vet multiple contractors, conduct extensive research beyond initial reviews, and inquire about their experience with similar projects. Vigilance during the construction process is critical, as Detox experienced periods where workers arrived without instructions and plans deviated significantly from her vision. She suggests asking detailed questions about the placement of utilities, such as outlets, and the practical implications of design choices before construction begins to avoid functionality problems. Despite the ongoing challenges, Detox maintains a positive outlook, focusing on smaller, manageable projects. She has created a 1980s Art Deco-inspired guest room with teal walls, custom carpeting, and a Hollywood-style vanity, and has developed a Tim Burton-inspired garden. In October, she plans to engage new contractors and designers, with the assistance of her sister, who has a background in interior design and architecture. Detox intends to ask a crucial question to potential new contractors: "Are you familiar with glamour, and can you provide it?" This highlights her desire for a contractor who understands and can deliver on her specific aesthetic and quality expectations, contrasting with her prior negative experience. #HomeRenovation #ContractorIssues #InteriorDesign #CelebrityHome #HomeownerTips #DesignChallenges #RenovationNightmare #HomeRenovation #ContractorIssues #InteriorDesign #CelebrityHome #HomeownerTips #DesignChallenges #RenovationNightmare
