Sophia Bush & Nia Batts' Salon Is More Than Just A Dry Bar

Sophia Bush, known for her acting career, has also become a prominent social activist and, in 2017, co-founded Detroit Blows with her best friend, Nia Batts. Detroit Blows is a Detroit-based, one-stop, nontoxic finishing salon, and it distinguishes itself through a significant philanthropic component called Detroit Grows. This arm of the business is dedicated to supporting female entrepreneurs and women-focused organizations in Detroit by donating a percentage of its retail footprint and $1 from every blowout service. Nia Batts, a Detroit native and former senior director at Viacom, conceived the idea for Detroit Blows in 2010. She observed a lack of quality salon services within Detroit's city limits, forcing residents to seek these services in the suburbs. This observation, coupled with her desire to reinvest in her hometown, motivated her to leave her corporate role and become an entrepreneur. Bush joined as a partner, driven by a shared vision to revitalize Detroit in a way that benefits the community and avoids gentrification, ensuring opportunities are accessible to all residents. The co-founders emphasized their commitment to creating an inclusive and safe environment. Traditionally, salons have been segregated spaces, but Detroit Blows actively combats this by ensuring their stylists are trained to work with all hair types. This approach has led to a diverse team and a welcoming atmosphere where clients feel confident in the stylists' abilities, regardless of their hair type. Furthermore, the salon prioritizes the health and safety of both clients and staff by exclusively using nontoxic products for all services, including hair, makeup, waxing, and vegan semi-permanent lash extensions. This commitment is particularly significant given the historical lack of regulation in the U.S. beauty industry, which often exposes workers to harmful chemicals leading to health issues like liver disease and respiratory problems. The founders highlighted that every product used aligns with their philosophy of physical and emotional safety. Beyond providing salon services, Detroit Blows is a mission-driven company that believes in reinvesting in the community. Both Bush and Batts articulated that profitability and purpose can coexist. They actively support local initiatives like Alternatives for Girls and provide grants to other Detroit-based entrepreneurs. Their business model demonstrates that a for-profit enterprise can also be a for-purpose organization, generating income while making a tangible positive impact on people's lives. The grants they distribute are designed to significantly change the lives of the recipients, fostering economic growth and opportunity within Detroit. Looking ahead, Detroit Blows launched an online platform called "Beyond the Blowout." This platform serves as a hub for their massive online community of women who are fans of the brand but cannot access the physical salon. "Beyond the Blowout" offers a holistic approach to modern self-care, business insights for women, and creates a well-crafted safe space for women to seek advice on various topics aligned with the brand's values. This digital expansion allows them to reach a broader audience and continue their mission of empowerment and community building beyond their physical location. #SophiaBush #NiaBatts #DetroitBlows #SocialEntrepreneurship #CommunityReinvestment #BeautyIndustry #NontoxicProducts #FemaleFounders #DetroitRevitalization #SophiaBush #NiaBatts #DetroitBlows #SocialEntrepreneurship #CommunityReinvestment #BeautyIndustry #NontoxicProducts #FemaleFounders #DetroitRevitalization
