These IKEA Cabinets Hold Everything the Tiny Closet in My Studio Apartment Can’t
Living in a studio apartment often presents significant challenges for individuals who accumulate a large number of possessions. This particular article highlights the personal experience of Julia Stevens, Domino’s style editor, who navigated the complexities of organizing a compact 13-by-17-foot studio with only one closet. Despite being a collector of various items like vases, bowls, and baskets, which she uses for both professional styling and personal enjoyment, her limited storage space made it difficult to accommodate everything. Her existing closet was insufficient for her clothing, and under-bed storage was already allocated for suitcases and linens, leaving a critical need for additional, substantial storage solutions.
Faced with this organizational dilemma, Stevens decided to repurpose and expand her existing IKEA Ivar cabinets. She had previously used two Ivar units vertically stacked in her former apartment to store household essentials. For her studio, she acquired a third Ivar cabinet and arranged all three side-by-side to create a long, credenza-like unit beneath her television. This configuration offered a significant increase in storage capacity while maintaining a sleek, integrated appearance. However, the standard Ivar cabinets presented a practical issue: their doors would snag on the floor when placed directly on the ground. To resolve this, Stevens implemented a DIY solution by adding wooden blocks as feet to elevate the cabinets.
She sourced these wooden blocks from Amazon and then painted them to match the cabinets and the surrounding walls using "Skylight" by Farrow & Ball, a dusty blue shade. This strategic color choice helped the cabinets blend seamlessly into the room, creating the illusion of built-in storage units that almost disappeared into the wall. The finished piece measured 95 inches wide but was only 12 inches deep, making it surprisingly unobtrusive despite its considerable length. This shallow depth was crucial for not overwhelming the small studio space while still providing ample storage.
Stevens systematically organized the interior of the extended cabinet unit into three distinct sections. The left cabinet was designated for accessories, with bags neatly slotted and hats stacked. The middle section housed practical items such as tools, emergency gifts, and her iron. The right cabinet was dedicated to entertaining essentials and liquor. To further enhance organization within these sections, she incorporated Hay’s small recycled colored crates, which fit perfectly lengthwise, allowing her to compartmentalize smaller items like belts and scarves. The article emphasizes that the primary benefit of this storage solution is its ability to conceal clutter, stating that once the doors are closed, the organized chaos within is completely hidden, providing a sense of tidiness and calm in a small living area. The Ivar Cabinet is noted as being available for $130.
