Consumer Reports Shares 2025's Best Kitchen Countertop So Far—and It's Not Granite

The selection of kitchen countertops presents a significant decision for homeowners, involving numerous material options, each with distinct characteristics and benefits. To assist in this choice, Consumer Reports conducts comprehensive evaluations of various countertop materials. For 2025, their findings indicate that quartz, an engineered stone, is the top-performing kitchen countertop material, surpassing even popular natural stones like granite. Consumer Reports' assessment of countertop materials involves expert lab tests designed to evaluate key performance indicators. These tests measure a material's resistance to stains, cutting, abrasions, heat tolerance, and impact. Each category is scored out of five, and the aggregated scores determine the overall ranking. The detailed explanations provided for each factor enable consumers to make informed decisions tailored to their specific kitchen needs. Quartz consistently receives high marks in these rigorous tests. It achieved a score of 4 out of 5 for stain resistance, demonstrating its ability to repel 20 common food and household stains. Its durability against cutting implements, such as weighted chef's knives and serrated knives, earned it a perfect score of 5 out of 5. Similarly, quartz excelled in abrasion resistance, also scoring 5 out of 5, indicating its strong defense against surface wear. In terms of heat tolerance, quartz once again demonstrated superior performance, scoring 5 out of 5. This evaluation involved testing its resilience to damage and discoloration when exposed to an oil-filled pot heated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The high scores across these critical categories underscore quartz's robust nature and suitability for demanding kitchen environments. Despite its impressive durability, it is important to acknowledge that quartz is not an indestructible material, given its origin from rock. The impact durability of quartz, which assesses its ability to withstand heavy objects being dropped on it, received a score of 2 out of 5. This lower score highlights a potential vulnerability, particularly with lower-quality quartz options, which may be more susceptible to breakage. Therefore, it is advisable to exercise caution with heavy items, such as cast iron cookware, and to avoid sitting or standing on quartz countertops to prevent potential damage. Despite this one area of moderate performance, quartz's overall superior ratings across multiple critical attributes cement its position as the leading kitchen countertop material for 2025, according to Consumer Reports. #KitchenCountertops #Quartz #ConsumerReports #HomeImprovement #KitchenRemodel #MaterialDurability #StainResistance #HeatTolerance #KitchenCountertops #Quartz #ConsumerReports #HomeImprovement #KitchenRemodel #MaterialDurability #StainResistance #HeatTolerance
