I Quit My Job and Moved Back in With My Parents — I Sleep in the Kitchen

Laura Kerr, a 42-year-old single mother in Scotland, shares her experience of leaving a high-stress career in local government after a significant health scare. For over a decade, she managed hundreds of staff and millions of British pounds, often working seven days a week until the early hours of the morning. This relentless schedule, driven by her desire to provide for her 13-year-old daughter, led to chronic stress, manifesting as hives and rashes. Allergy tests confirmed these physical symptoms were stress-induced. The turning point came in August 2024, when Kerr experienced heart spasms and body numbness, leading to an emergency hospital visit. She was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia, a heart condition triggered by chronic stress. This diagnosis prompted her doctor to sign her off work, forcing a reevaluation of her life choices. To alleviate financial pressure and create space for a career change, Kerr decided to sell her large house and most of her belongings, moving back in with her parents who lived nearby. This move allowed her daughter to have a private room in her grandparents' two-bedroom house, while Kerr herself slept on a blow-up bed in the kitchen. Simultaneously, Kerr resigned from her government job, recognizing the impossibility of returning to such a high-stress environment. She viewed this drastic change as a necessary fresh start. The immediate benefits included the disappearance of her stress-related physical symptoms, such as hives and rashes, and a sense of relief from the immense pressure she had been under. Although she is still awaiting an operation for her heart condition, her symptoms have not recurred since leaving her job. Living with her parents, while challenging due to their different routines and household dynamics, has provided invaluable support and the freedom to pursue a long-held dream. Kerr has since retrained as a hypnotherapist and successfully launched her own business, Elle Kay. She expresses deep gratitude for her parents' help, acknowledging that their support enabled her to make significant life changes without immediate financial strain. Despite the temporary living situation, she plans to move into her own space by the beginning of the next year, looking forward to regaining independence while cherishing the newfound happiness and fulfillment derived from prioritizing her health and pursuing a passion. #CareerChange #StressManagement #SingleParenting #HealthCrisis #FamilySupport #Entrepreneurship #WorkLifeBalance #PersonalGrowth #CareerChange #StressManagement #SingleParenting #HealthCrisis #FamilySupport #Entrepreneurship #WorkLifeBalance #PersonalGrowth

My parents turned a 500-square-foot shed on their property into a tiny home. I live there so I can afford to stay in my hometown.
