Interior designer Kathleen Walsh's top 5 tips on making your laundry room stand out from the crowd

Kathleen Walsh, a New York-based interior designer with over 30 years of experience, shares her top five tips for designing a beautiful and functional laundry room. Walsh emphasizes that as clients spend more time at home, previously overlooked spaces like laundry rooms are receiving increased attention. Her design philosophy focuses on bringing nuanced color and texture to these utility areas, making them as inviting and aesthetically pleasing as any other room in the house. The first tip highlights the importance of embracing bold colors and patterns. Walsh suggests that the laundry room is an ideal space to experiment with vibrant designs that evoke happiness and calmness. For instance, in a recent project, she used hand-painted wallpaper from Fromental as the central inspiration, transforming the chore of doing laundry into a more enjoyable experience. By selecting elements that bring joy, the space transcends its utilitarian function. Secondly, Walsh stresses the necessity of incorporating elevated touches. She advocates treating the laundry room with the same design consideration as other main living areas. This involves adding thoughtful details that contribute to the room's character. Examples include using a mosaic backsplash from Artistic Tile, installing a hands-free Kohler faucet, selecting nuanced hardware from Nest Studio Collection, and displaying artwork. Additionally, she recommends pretty lighting fixtures with dimmers, strategically spaced to create a pleasant ambiance, noting that these small details are often what people notice most and elevate a room's overall feel. The third tip advises leveraging odd or challenging architectural spaces within the laundry room. Walsh acknowledges that these rooms often present unique design puzzles due to the hidden ducting, plumbing, and electrical systems. However, she views these challenges as opportunities for clever design solutions. In one project, an L-shaped layout was transformed into an advantageous hideaway and folding corner, complete with a television, effectively creating a multi-functional retreat within the home. Fourth, Walsh suggests thinking semi-custom when it comes to materials and fixtures. For high-traffic areas like laundry rooms, not every element needs to be custom-made. She demonstrates this by combining custom cabinetry with off-the-shelf interior organizers from brands like Hafele. Similarly, sheer shades from The Shade Store were used, and a seemingly custom floor was achieved by cleverly combining stocked 3x6-inch stone tiles. This approach allows for a high-end look without the full custom price tag. Finally, Walsh encourages investing in joyful indulgences. She describes this as a life lesson applicable to everyday tasks, including laundry. Such indulgences might include using premium detergents like those from The Laundress, or even scented products like Le Labo's Santal 33 for linens. These small, thoughtful splurges, whether a luxurious candle, body wash, or a box of chocolates, are presented as ways to make mundane daily activities a happier and more pleasant experience. Her insights encourage a holistic approach to home design, ensuring even practical spaces contribute to overall well-being and aesthetic pleasure. #InteriorDesign #LaundryRoom #KathleenWalsh #HomeDecor #DesignTips #FunctionalSpaces #AestheticAppeal #CustomCabinetry #LuxuryInteriors #InteriorDesign #LaundryRoom #KathleenWalsh #HomeDecor #DesignTips #FunctionalSpaces #AestheticAppeal #CustomCabinetry #LuxuryInteriors
