AIA Young Architect award: Carl Sergio, AIA
The article celebrates Carl Sergio, AIA, a recipient of the Young Architect Award, highlighting his profound impact on the architectural profession through mentorship, leadership, and community engagement. Sergio’s journey is characterized by his dedication to connecting with others, a drive born from his own challenges during the 2008 recession. This experience fueled his commitment to supporting students and emerging professionals in navigating the architectural landscape. His efforts have led to the creation and support of numerous mentorship programs, personally affecting hundreds of individuals across the United States and seven other countries.
Sergio's professional career is marked by significant contributions to various architectural projects. As a senior project architect at Wright Heerema Architects in Chicago, he has been involved in the development of over two million square feet of retail, hotel, restaurant, and commercial office space. Earlier, at Gensler, he collaborated with 13 of the firm's offices on national projects for major clients like JLL, Walmart, and PNC Bank. His ability to foster productive studio cultures was evident when he joined Interior Architects. Tasked with managing five critical projects for an electric automobile client that had caused staff turmoil, Sergio successfully repaired relationships and delivered unique designs that showcased the client's innovative products.
A significant part of Sergio's legacy is his extensive involvement with the American Institute of Architects (AIA). His initial engagement began with the YAF Indianapolis steering committee, which sparked his interest in AIA service and leadership. Following his graduation from AIA Chicago's Bridge Mentorship Program, he took the helm, leading the program for eight years. Under his guidance, this nationally recognized program engaged over 150 young leaders and nearly 50 AIA Fellows, inspiring other AIA chapters to establish similar mentorship initiatives. As AIA Illinois' young architect regional director, Sergio developed a toolkit for new emerging professional groups across the country, documented AIA mentorship programs, and introduced the EP-Friendly Firm Award to his state.
Sergio’s leadership extended through challenging times, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. As chair of the EP Network, he maintained virtual relationships and networks, ensuring continued support and connection within the community. With the aid of an AIA College of Fellows grant, he produced a series of “Firmside Chat” videos, hosted virtual happy hours, and organized forums with NOMA focusing on racial injustice. His commitment to service also includes his role on AIA Chicago’s Education Committee and as a member of the ACE Mentorship team. Through ACE Mentorship, he conceptualized pro bono projects with Rebuilding Together and City Year and captained a Canstruction team that earned a People’s Choice award and raised over $30,000 in donated food over four years.
Carl Sergio's impact is further underscored by the testimonials from his peers, including Alicia Belton, FAIA, Derrick Choi, AIA, Beau Frail, AIA, Allison Mendez, AIA, and Jodi van der Wiel, FAIA. These endorsements highlight his exceptional leadership qualities and his unwavering dedication to fostering community and supporting those in need within the architectural profession. The Young Architects Award, which he received, acknowledges individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and make significant contributions early in their careers, a description that perfectly encapsulates Sergio’s career.
