Expert Holiday Home Decorating the O’Hara Interiors Way
This article highlights the holiday decorating philosophy and personal home design of Gabe Lindberg, a designer at O’Hara Interiors. Lindberg's home, located on the shores of Lake Minnetonka in Orono, Minnesota, was a new build completed in 2023, following a teardown of an older, cramped house on the same property. The decision to rebuild was prompted by the need for more private spaces and guest accommodations when both Lindberg and her husband, Mark, began working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 3,300-square-foot, four-bedroom, 3.5-bath residence was designed in collaboration with Thompson Construction, aiming for a modern, light-filled aesthetic blended with comfort and refinement. Lindberg incorporated Old World charm through elements like leaded-glass windows and transoms, along with traditional, understated trim profiles. The first floor features an open-concept kitchen and living room, central to the home's design for hosting family and friends, especially during the holidays. The family frequently entertains guests from out of state, offering them a taste of a northern winter with activities like ice fishing, skating, and snowshoeing.
The kitchen is a key highlight, featuring custom beaded cabinetry designed by Lindberg herself, crafted by a local cabinetmaker. It boasts a custom Venetian plaster hood, panel-front appliances, unlacquered brass hardware, honed quartzite countertops, and an island painted in Benjamin Moore’s Boothbay Gray, complete with reeded details. An Italian Ilve range serves as the focal point. The living room and dining room are intentionally open yet distinct. The living room includes a cast stone fireplace surround that visually links to the kitchen's range hood. The dining room, described as a 'treehouse' due to its proximity to a large oak tree, features a custom Moroccan-inspired arch made from reclaimed barnwood and a Visual Comfort chandelier, serving as a popular spot for games and puzzles.
Functionality is also key, as evidenced by the mudroom, which is designed in a muted green-gray and includes lockers for outdoor gear, maintaining organization while adding to the home's aesthetic. The primary suite, a winter sanctuary, is equipped with a large soaking tub positioned between his-and-hers marble waterfall-edge vanities with reeded white oak fronts. Large windows in the suite offer picturesque lake views, and carefully selected accents include Zia green tiled floors and custom natural brass fixtures from a Moroccan artisan. The bedroom also features three lake-facing windows, providing a view of ice houses in winter, and is adorned with a Christmas tree and a festive wreath.
Lindberg’s holiday decorating philosophy centers on adding warmth and greenery without excessive glitz. She incorporates natural elements such as fresh Norfolk pine in various settings, including the primary suite shower, tablescapes, and as replacements for winter florals. Her mudroom decor includes simple items like dried oranges and bottlebrush trees, chosen for their understated texture and natural appeal. She also displays a collection of vintage brass pieces, like reindeer and penguins. Since moving into the new home in 2023, Lindberg's collection of greenery has grown, but her approach to seasonal decor remains focused on creating a festive backdrop for connection and gathering, ensuring the home feels comforting and celebratory even after the holidays conclude.
