The owners of this colorful home have gone from ‘Wes Anderson meets Provençal’ to ‘Indian-Georgian revival’

Chris Graves and Jolene Ellis, the duo behind the interior design practice Clarence & Graves, transformed their rural apartment into a vibrant "Indian-Georgian revival" space, a significant shift from their previous "Wes Anderson meets Provençal" London home. Their design philosophy is deeply influenced by their background in film production, focusing on capturing aesthetic images and storytelling, and a strong belief in open spaces without partitions that disrupt sightlines. The couple's design approach is a reflection of their personal tastes and travels, rather than adherence to current trends. Their move from a four-story city townhouse to a four-bedroom country duplex apartment during lockdown was a wildcard decision driven by a desire for a new aesthetic adventure and the potential to transform a neglected space. They were particularly drawn to the apartment's height, light, and unencumbered views. The property itself, set within an 18th-century Georgian manor house with additions by Sir Edwin Lutyens and later modifications in the 1970s and '80s, offered a rich historical canvas. The apartment now features high-impact chequerboard floors in soft blue and off-white, contrasted with deep terracotta walls and verdigris lanterns from Vaughan. A key design element is the use of imposing, floor-to-ceiling glazed doors, custom-commissioned by Chris, to enhance the connection between rooms. This deliberate choice involved knocking through an original wall, significantly improving flow and natural light throughout the space. The renovation received commendation from conservation specialists for enhancing the listed building's heritage features. Their interior aesthetic weaves together shared cultural and sensory experiences. Rich color palettes are inspired by their travels in India and Morocco, complemented by extensive book collections and a passion for fashion, which subtly influenced the kitchen's "accidental Gucci-esque palette" of dark green cabinetry and striped Ralph Lauren wallpaper. Art plays a significant role, with a collection that spans antique oils, Georgian portraits, and colorful abstracts. By removing 1980s additions like false ceilings, stud walls, and windowless bathrooms, the couple restored the home's original grandeur and scale, revealing 16 rural-facing windows. Furniture is a carefully curated mix of classic and contemporary pieces. Modern velvet sofas are paired with a 19th-century mahogany sofa, reupholstered in a bold green and cream stripe. They have also invested in elegant antiques, including Regency ebonized and gilt dining chairs, a mid-19th-century burr walnut desk, and an ebonized faux bamboo Howard & Sons table. A former shop counter was ingeniously repurposed as a rustic kitchen island. These pieces, acquired over time, are chosen for their quality and craftsmanship, becoming investment heirlooms. The couple's home is a projected embodiment of their true selves, a welcoming and individual space that hosts family, friends, and guests. The design by Clarence & Graves effectively merges historical elements with personal experiences and eclectic tastes, creating a unique and characterful living environment. The apartment and other similar homes are featured in Ali Heath's book, "Create: At Home with Old & New." #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #GeorgianRevival #ClarenceAndGraves #ColorfulInteriors #EclecticStyle #Renovation #DesignInspiration #MansionApartment #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #GeorgianRevival #ClarenceAndGraves #ColorfulInteriors #EclecticStyle #Renovation #DesignInspiration #MansionApartment
