Talking Restaurant Design in Utah with Rachel Hodson page sep sitename

Rachel Hodson, founder of Stunning Dismount, has transitioned her career from food periodical publishing to interior design, specifically focusing on sustainable restaurant spaces. Her journey began with a deep-rooted interest in local food systems, permaculture, and regenerative systems, which she previously explored as the owner of the food periodical 'Edible Wasatch'. Hodson, who is not classically trained in interior design, discovered that her eye for design, honed in print media, translated effectively to creating physical spaces. Her company aims to blend sustainability with aesthetic appeal in public and commercial environments. The pandemic served as a pivotal moment for Hodson, prompting her to critically assess prevailing design practices. She observed that many interior design approaches mirrored the wasteful principles of fast fashion and fast food, leading to significant ecological and economic impacts. This realization spurred her to educate herself on sustainable building practices, attending conferences and learning about eco-conscious design methodologies. Her goal became to assist clients in adopting more sustainable ways of thinking and operating, particularly within the restaurant industry, which she views as a crucial platform for educating the public about sustainability. Hodson emphasizes a holistic approach to design, considering all five senses when crafting a space. She believes that good design extends beyond visual aesthetics to encompass how a space smells, sounds, feels, and how light interacts within it. This comprehensive perspective ensures that environments are not only visually appealing but also functionally and emotionally engaging for occupants. She advocates for public spaces, especially restaurants, to serve as frontline educators regarding sustainable building practices, mirroring their historical role in informing the public about food. A prime example of her philosophy in action is the patio extension and bar area project at Manoli's. This project was designed to integrate the outdoors with the indoors, featuring windows that fully open to create a seamless connection with the exterior. The space can either remain open to the main dining room or be partitioned for private events, all while adhering to sustainability best practices. Hodson collaborated closely with Manoli and Katrina, the owners of Manoli's, ensuring the design aligned with their vision and her eco-conscious principles. Hodson's collaborative design philosophy involves working hand-in-hand with clients, acting more as a design coach than a sole creative director. She brings ideas to the table and allows clients time to digest and respond, fostering a shared ownership of the design process. Her methodology involves in-depth consideration of sensory experiences, service flow, entry points, sightlines, and potential pinch points within a space, often utilizing 3D models to optimize functionality and ambiance. She focuses on the return on investment for businesses, ensuring that the designed space enhances operational efficiency and staff experience. Looking ahead, Hodson is committed to continuing her work in regenerative design. A notable upcoming project involves the green remodel of the Tower Theater. Having previously redesigned the Broadway Theater, she views the Tower Theater project as a significant opportunity to implement large-scale sustainability initiatives, preserving a neighborhood landmark while integrating ethical and eco-friendly design principles. Her driving force remains the creation of functional and sustainable spaces, guided by her ethics of being responsible earthlings and citizens. #RestaurantDesign #SustainableDesign #InteriorDesign #RachelHodson #StunningDismount #EcoFriendlyDesign #ManolisRestaurant #RegenerativeDesign #PublicSpaces #RestaurantDesign #SustainableDesign #InteriorDesign #RachelHodson #StunningDismount #EcoFriendlyDesign #ManolisRestaurant #RegenerativeDesign #PublicSpaces
