Say Goodbye to Granite and Marble—This Countertop Material Will Be Everywhere Next Year, New Kitchen Report Says

The National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) has released its 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, which highlights the evolving role of the kitchen as the heart of the home and forecasts key design trends. The report, based on a survey of over 600 industry professionals, indicates that kitchens are becoming larger and more central to home design. Transitional design, which blends traditional and modern aesthetics, continues to be the most popular style, favored by 72% of respondents. Contemporary/modern minimalism follows at 60%, while more traditional styles like farmhouse and cottage are declining in popularity. Neutral colors, including browns, grays, black, and white, are predicted to remain dominant in kitchen palettes, with 96% of professionals anticipating their continued prevalence. Green (86%) and blue (78%) are expected to be the most popular non-neutral colors, often incorporated in subtler ways such as backsplashes, kitchen islands, and decorative accessories. White oak is projected to be the leading cabinet material for the next three years, chosen by 50% of respondents, although there is a growing interest in darker woods like walnut, which ranked second at 28%. Sleek, modern European-style cabinet doors (flat panel slabs) are preferred, followed by classic Shaker styles. Trends also point towards floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and panel-ready appliances, contributing to a more streamlined aesthetic. For countertops, quartz remains the top choice, favored by 78% of respondents, due to its aesthetic appeal and low maintenance. Quartzite is the second most popular option. Granite's popularity is declining, with less than half of respondents (43%) expecting it to be a major material. Marble, despite its luxurious reputation, ranks low (26%) due to its delicate and high-maintenance nature. Lighter-colored countertops with matte or honed finishes and traditional or waterfall edges are in demand. There is a divide among homeowners regarding countertop colors for main surfaces and kitchen islands, with 56% preferring different colors and 44% wanting them to match. Matte finishes are also extending to sinks, faucets, and lighting fixtures. In backsplashes, ceramic and porcelain tiles are the dominant choice, selected by 70% of respondents. However, quartz and quartzite are gaining traction, with 64% and 61% respectively. Seamless, solid surface stone backsplashes that extend from the countertop are becoming more common, reinforcing the preference for a clean and streamlined look. Engineered wood flooring is expected to be a top choice, with large-format and plank styles that minimize grout lines for easier maintenance. Seventy-eight percent of respondents anticipate engineered wood to be trendy, compared to 59% for traditional hardwood. Warm neutral and lighter wood tones are preferred for flooring. Kitchens are also expanding to include activity-based zones or “lifestyle enhancements.” The most sought-after feature is a beverage area, such as a coffee station, expected by 85% of respondents. Other popular additions include attached mudrooms, pet feeding stations, eat-in kitchens, and home offices or study spaces, further solidifying the kitchen's role as a central hub in the home. #KitchenTrends #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #CountertopMaterials #CabinetryStyles #ColorPalettes #KitchenRemodel #NKBAReport #HomeImprovement #KitchenTrends #HomeDesign #InteriorDesign #CountertopMaterials #CabinetryStyles #ColorPalettes #KitchenRemodel #NKBAReport #HomeImprovement
