Ottagono Packs a Full Workout into a Luminous Octagonal Column
The Ottagono, designed by architect Giulia Foscari for Cassina Custom Interiors in collaboration with Technogym, presents an innovative solution to the growing demand for home gyms in compact living spaces and luxury hospitality settings. This octagonal column, occupying less than one square meter, seamlessly integrates a comprehensive workout system while maintaining an aesthetic that transcends typical fitness equipment. It debuted during Milan Design Week and is slated for installation at Hotel du Cap Eden Roc in Antibes, highlighting its appeal in high-end environments where spatial efficiency and discreet design are paramount.
When closed, the Ottagono is envisioned as a sculptural floor lamp, featuring gradient finishes in deep blue or emerald green that subtly transition to lighter tones towards the top. Its clean facets and minimal seams contribute to a minimalist and artistic appearance. An integrated uplight at its summit casts a soft ambient glow on the ceiling, allowing the unit to blend into a living room or suite as a piece of art rather than a functional fitness device. This design philosophy directly addresses the challenge of integrating fitness gear, which often clashes with interior aesthetics, into sophisticated living spaces.
Upon opening its faceted doors, the Ottagono transforms into a vibrant, fully equipped micro-gym. The interior is brightly lit with turquoise, featuring a vertical screen that streams Technogym workouts. A mirror on one of the doors enables users to monitor their form during exercise. The interior is thoughtfully organized, with adjustable dumbbells secured in octagonal cradles at the base, kettlebells suspended from polished hooks, resistance bands draped over pegs, and a foam roller alongside mobility balls. Foscari describes this transformation as "opening a room within a room," underscoring how a complete gym experience is contained within a single piece of furniture.
A typical workout session with the Ottagono involves unrolling a mat, facing the screen, and engaging in guided strength or mobility exercises using the readily accessible equipment. Once the workout is complete, all items are neatly returned to their designated slots, and the doors are closed, reverting the column to its original, inconspicuous form as a lamp. The compact footprint of the Ottagono is notable, being smaller than a dining chair, making it a highly efficient solution for those who desire a full training cycle without dedicating an entire room or significant floor space to traditional gym equipment.
The Ottagono's design caters to environments where space is a premium, such as luxury hotel suites, private residences, superyachts, and boutique hotels. Clients in these settings often expect integrated wellness amenities but prefer them to be discreet and out of sight until needed. This innovative product aligns with the contemporary trend towards fluid, multifunctional spaces where furniture pieces are expected to serve multiple purposes and maintain an elegant appearance when not in active use. The Ottagono suggests a future where wellness furniture acts as a form of micro-architecture, capable of compressing complex spatial programs into vertical volumes, thereby offering a solution for living spaces that need to adapt to various functions.
