Is This the Year of the Bunk Bed? Some Designers Think So. (Published 2023)
Bunk beds, once primarily functional for children's rooms or crowded spaces, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, appearing in upscale homes and boutique hotels. Designers are transforming them into luxurious and appealing sleeping solutions for both children and adults. The article explores how designers approach the creation of these elevated bunk rooms, focusing on practical considerations and aesthetic enhancements.
Space analysis is crucial when planning a bunk room. Designers emphasize the importance of measuring the room to determine appropriate dimensions, especially ceiling height, to ensure sufficient headroom for occupants. A minimum of three feet of headspace from the top of the mattress to the bunk above or the ceiling is recommended. Mattress selection is also vital, as varying mattress heights can impact the available headroom. While twin mattresses are common, twin XLs are often preferred for adults due to their added length. In larger spaces, full or queen-sized mattresses can be incorporated, sometimes mixing sizes with a larger mattress on the bottom and a twin on top for versatility, catering to different sleeping needs or accommodating guests for sleepovers.
Designers tackle various spatial challenges. In rooms with lower ceilings, designers suggest placing the bottom mattress closer to the floor, akin to a platform bed. For sloped ceilings, a degree of flexibility with the three-foot headroom rule for the top bunk might be necessary. Counterintuitively, designers like Jenny Keenan advocate for installing bunk beds against walls with windows, suggesting that this can enhance the appeal of the sleeping nooks. Motorized shades are recommended for privacy and light control in such setups, allowing for natural light during the day and darkness at night with ease.
Accessibility to the top bunk is another key design element. While simple vertical ladders are space-efficient, ladders with wide, deep steps or angled designs are more comfortable and less intimidating, especially for adults. Integrated staircases, while requiring more space, offer the safest and most comfortable ascent. Designers like Brynne Flowers of John Martine have incorporated narrow oak staircases with horizontal safety rails into their custom bunk bed designs.
Storage solutions are essential in bunk rooms, given their capacity to accommodate multiple people. Designers frequently integrate drawers or rolling bins under the lower bunks for bedding, luggage, or personal items. Built-in staircases often feature drawers within the risers. Additional storage innovations include small closets with hanging rods at the end of bunks and integrated desks, maximizing the functionality of the space. To enhance comfort and functionality, designers often add creature comforts. Wall-mounted reading lamps with individual switches and recessed niches with outlets are common additions, providing personalized lighting and a convenient spot for personal belongings like a glass of water or a phone. Curtains for each bunk offer privacy and a sense of fun, particularly appealing to children, and decorative pillows and throws complete the inviting atmosphere.
The article also highlights that custom-built bunk rooms are not the only option. Stylish bunk rooms can be achieved on a budget using off-the-shelf products and creative decorative elements. Sara Charlesworth, a designer, demonstrated this by reusing an existing free-standing bunk bed, enhancing it with a textile valance, long curtains, plug-in wall lights with decorative cords, and surface-mounted bookshelves, proving that thoughtful touches can elevate even budget-friendly solutions to appear bespoke.
