Beautifully styled beds are easier than you think with these styling tips and tricks
Achieving a beautifully styled bed can appear daunting without a professional background in interior design. However, interior stylist Fiona Gould emphasizes that creating an appealing bedding aesthetic is accessible to everyone by re-evaluating traditional styling rules and embracing creativity. Modern bed styling no longer necessitates perfectly matched or symmetrically arranged sheets, quilt covers, and pillowcases. Instead, the focus has shifted towards personal expression through a playful combination of clashing prints, mixed colors, and varying textures, sizes, and heights of bedding elements.
Fiona Gould highlights the current trend of incorporating floral and check prints into homewares and fashion. She advises that these seemingly disparate patterns can be successfully combined by maintaining a consistent color palette, ensuring a cohesive look. Furthermore, contrasting scales, such as pairing a large-scale floral with a smaller-scale check, can enhance visual interest and prevent the patterns from overwhelming each other.
For cooler seasons, softer and more muted color palettes, particularly blues and greens, are currently popular. Gould suggests contrasting these hues with lighter colors for a fresh ambiance or deeper shades for a more dramatic, wintery feel. This versatile color scheme also complements natural tones like sandy browns, mocha, ochre, whites, pastels, lilac, black, and soft greys, offering a broad range of styling possibilities.
An often-overlooked styling opportunity lies in showcasing bed sheets. Instead of concealing them beneath quilts and pillows, Gould recommends making flat sheets visible by folding them up and over the quilt cover. This technique adds depth and texture to the bed, especially when the sheet's color contrasts attractively with the quilt cover. This simple trick elevates the overall appearance of the bed, transforming it from a functional item into a focal point.
To achieve a luxurious hotel-like appearance, a plush quilt look can be created with ease. Gould's method involves rolling the top of the quilt cover down approximately 20cm, and then repeating this step for a second roll, creating a thick, inviting band across the bed. Incorporating European pillows behind standard pillows further enhances this opulent and comfortable aesthetic. Regarding decorative cushions, Gould encourages a relaxed approach, suggesting that they be laid at a slight angle for a casual, inviting feel, rather than using the traditional 'karate chop' method. For a more formal presentation, a long breakfast cushion can be a stylish and on-trend addition.
Finally, the throw blanket, an essential element for adding warmth and texture, can also be styled in various ways. While some prefer draping it casually or laying it across the foot of the bed, Gould favors a more refined approach. She advises folding the throw neatly to about 40cm wide and tucking it slightly under the quilt cover's fold. This technique introduces texture in a sophisticated manner, contributing to a polished and inviting bed. Even traditional white bedding, often perceived as plain, can be modernized and made more engaging through layering various textures, such as a textured blanket, smooth linen sheets, and pillows with distinct textures, potentially incorporating a subtle print for added elevation.
