6 Bedroom Paint Colors Designers Don't Want to See in 2026
The selection of paint colors for a bedroom significantly influences the mood and atmosphere of the space, impacting an individual's disposition at the beginning and end of each day. Design experts emphasize that various elements such as undertones, saturation, and temperature of a hue can drastically alter its visual appeal and emotional resonance within a room. For the upcoming year, several bedroom paint colors are being cautioned against due to their potential to create an undesirable or overstimulating environment.
Bubblegum pink is identified as one such color that designers advise avoiding. While softer shades of pink can be appropriate, a vibrant bubblegum pink can reflect intensely throughout the room, leading to an overwhelming effect. Instead, a nuanced pink that blends blush with soft coral tones is suggested as a more suitable alternative, offering depth and tranquility.
Cool-toned greens, particularly blue-greens, are also listed among the colors to reconsider for bedrooms. These hues are perceived as potentially moody in a way that does not support a calm and restful ambiance. Designers recommend opting for warmer greens, such as olive tones, which can integrate harmoniously with natural materials and rich wood accents, fostering a grounded and comfortable feeling. Chartreuse, a tertiary color formed from yellow and green, is another green variant deemed unsuitable for bedroom walls due to its high intensity and potential to overstimulate, despite being a favored accent color in other applications. Earthy olive green is again proposed as a peaceful substitute.
Regarding darker shades, burgundy is identified as a challenging color for bedroom walls. Despite the current trend favoring bold and moody colors, burgundy can evoke a less serene, almost unsettling visual impression. A richer alternative, such as eggplant, is suggested, as it can blend effectively with navy and dark greens, providing a sophisticated yet calming atmosphere.
Bright, cool-toned whites are also discouraged. While warm off-whites are considered timeless and safe, a stark, cool white can feel less inviting, especially in a bedroom setting. The recommendation is to shift towards off-white or toned white shades to create a cozier and more welcoming environment.
Finally, bright red is generally considered too intense for a bedroom. While some designers might approve of red in certain contexts, a vivid, racing-car red is deemed overly exciting and detrimental to restful sleep. A softer coral red is presented as a more acceptable option, capable of being both calming and flattering.
