Inca trail: Cristian Zuzunaga’s Peru-inspired furniture collection

Cristian Zuzunaga, renowned for his signature pixelated textiles, has unveiled a new furniture collection named ‘Inca’, which draws profound inspiration from his recent travels through Peru. The collection is characterized by geometric forms and patterns, directly influenced by the Spanish designer's encounters with ancient Inca architecture and construction techniques, particularly the Saksaywaman wall in Cusco. Zuzunaga describes this monumental structure as an 'amazing modular structure' with unknown technology, which served as the primary trigger for developing a collection that emphasizes timeless quality and durability. The ‘Inca’ collection encompasses a diverse range of furniture pieces, including elegant side tables, innovative lamps, and unique mirrors. A significant component of the collection is modular seating, which Zuzunaga designed to serve as a platform for experimenting with his current and future fabric designs. The creative process for the tables and mirrors involved a sophisticated blend of traditional Spanish craftsmanship and contemporary technologies, an approach that directly reflects Zuzunaga's fascination with the advanced construction methods observed in the Saksaywaman wall. In parallel, the modular seating elements are presented as a flexible system, featuring simple, clean shapes. These pieces are upholstered in a specially designed jacquard fabric, developed in collaboration with Kvadrat. This fabric further enhances the collection's Peruvian influences, incorporating patterns and textures that resonate with the aesthetic of the Inca civilization. A notable piece within the collection is the ‘Inca’ side table, crafted from a single piece of architectural concrete, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. The collection also includes a floor lamp with a 'Bitmap Black' shade and an 'Inca' mirror, which is handcrafted using an ancient technique, with each pattern meticulously derived from magnified original Inca prints. Another highlight is an armchair upholstered in ‘Inca’ brown fabric and a 'Print Verd' framed fabric piece, showcasing the versatility of Zuzunaga's textile designs. The collection was originally featured in the November 2016 issue of Wallpaper* (W*212), indicating its introduction to the design world. The development of this collection highlights Zuzunaga's artistic journey, combining historical inspiration with modern design principles to create furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and structurally significant. His work reflects a deep appreciation for cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary furniture design through innovative material use and collaborative efforts. #CristianZuzunaga #FurnitureDesign #IncaInspiration #PeruvianInfluence #ModularSeating #TextileDesign #SpanishCraftsmanship #ModernFurniture #KvadratCollaboration #CristianZuzunaga #FurnitureDesign #IncaInspiration #PeruvianInfluence #ModularSeating #TextileDesign #SpanishCraftsmanship #ModernFurniture #KvadratCollaboration
