IKEA's Redesigned BILLY Bookcase Is A Small Space Saver, But Are There Downsides?
IKEA's BILLY bookcase, a long-standing staple since 1979, has undergone a redesign, prompting a closer look at its updated features and potential drawbacks. The Swedish company introduced these changes to manage costs and inflation, ensuring the product remains affordable. The revamped line, now featuring a "New" label on IKEA's website, includes narrower, 15 3/4-inch wide models. These can be integrated into corner units using metallic corner fittings, a design intended to optimize space utilization by fitting into previously unused nooks and corners. This corner solution is particularly appealing for maximizing storage and enhancing aesthetics in smaller homes, offering an ideal setup for home libraries, avid readers, and BookTok enthusiasts. The versatility of the BILLY range allows for personalization, enabling customers to combine different sized bookcases to meet specific needs, a common advantage of IKEA furniture.
Despite the space-saving benefits and customization options, the redesigned BILLY bookcase has received mixed reviews, particularly concerning its quality and design. A significant change is the material swap from wood veneer to paper foil in 2022. While veneer is made from real wood and provides a high-end appearance and durability, paper foil is a printed contact paper designed to mimic wood grain. This material change has led to complaints from customers who observe a decrease in quality. Reviewers mention that the new paper foil peels and damages easily, and gives a cheaper look compared to the older veneer models. This issue is particularly frustrating for long-time BILLY users who note a substantial decline in material integrity.
Another point of contention arises from the aesthetic mismatch between new and old BILLY units. Customers attempting to expand existing collections with new additions have reported that the faux wood colors of the redesigned units do not align with the veneer of older models, affecting the cohesive look of their shelving. Furthermore, a common criticism relates to the perceived design of the corner solution. Many customers assume the units are shaped to fully fill a right-angle corner. While the separate hardware allows the three bookcases to be attached, giving the impression of a unified corner unit, only their front edges make contact. This design leaves significant dead space behind the units, a notable difference from true corner bookcases designed to maximize every inch of a corner. This aspect has disappointed some buyers who anticipated a more flush and integrated fit, similar to dedicated corner shelving units available from other retailers. These downsides highlight a trade-off between affordability and certain aspects of quality and design in the updated BILLY bookcase.
