Lighting plays a crucial role in interior design, capable of instantly transforming the mood and functionality of a room. Apure Architectural Lighting has introduced an innovative solution with its patented MINUS series, a collection of LED downlights designed to overcome these common design hurdles. Their MINUS series distinguishes itself by being the first LED downlight capable of recessing in less than one inch (25mm) of depth. This allows for a nearly imperceptible integration into ceilings, creating seamless, modern spaces filled with light without the typical visual intrusion of lighting fixtures. The series offers three distinct forms: the MINUS ONE, featuring a round finish; the MINUS TWO, with a square louver designed by PORSCHE DESIGN STUDIO; and the MINUS THREE, a semi-recessed square option specifically developed for illuminating artwork walls. A key feature of all MINUS LEDs is the incorporation of proprietary precision optics. This technology ensures that light is directed precisely where it is needed, minimizing light spill and maximizing efficiency. The design philosophy behind the MINUS series was centered on creating more usable space. The unique installation bracket for each recessed light allows architects and designers to maintain existing ceiling heights, preventing the need for costly and space-reducing drop ceilings that are often required for other recessed lighting systems. Philipp Petzold, VP of Apure Architectural Lighting, highlights this benefit, noting that the MINUS series requires a drop ceiling of no more than one inch, ensuring performance is not compromised. Versatility is another hallmark of the MINUS series. These lights can be installed in a wide range of environments, including challenging locations such as under AC ducts, in showers, and in marine settings. They are also compatible with various materials, including drywall, millwork, stone, and metal ceilings, offering significant flexibility for diverse architectural projects. The LEDs are engineered to mimic the softness of natural light while effectively reducing glare. This is achieved through proprietary lenses embedded in each fixture, which makes them an ideal choice for creating airy, contemporary interiors. The reduction of glare is particularly beneficial in both residential and commercial applications, as it allows the focus to remain on the interior elements and overall architecture rather than drawing attention to the light source itself. The genesis of the MINUS series can be traced back to Apure Architectural Lighting’s in-house illumination planning studio. This studio works closely with clients and design teams, providing a direct understanding of the practical challenges faced by designers. Recognizing the frequent compromises clients had to make regarding ceiling height for recessed lighting, the company identified a clear need for a new solution. Development of the MINUS series began in 2016, with the aim of creating a high-performance light fixture that could be recessed in virtually any application. By 2019, this goal was successfully achieved. The MINUS series is available with correlated color temperatures (CCT) of 2700K, 3000K, or 4000K, and boasts a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 90+, ensuring accurate color representation. The lights are fully dimmable and utilize proprietary microchip technology to achieve an impressive lifespan of 50,000 hours (LM80). Each fixture produces a lumen output of 1140 from the source, and up to four fixtures can be powered by a single power supply.
