This elegant quartzite kitchen island shines at the heart of the home – thanks to Karr Bick
Karr Bick's design and construction team created a kitchen featuring two large Taj Mahal quartzite islands, providing ample space for cooking and entertaining. Designer Janelle Helms explained that the clients enjoy entertaining frequently, and the expansive 13-foot by 4.5-foot islands perfectly fit the large area, making practical sense within the home's layout. The kitchen seamlessly transitions into a dining area and a hearth room, which includes a cozy TV area. This open-concept design necessitated a flow that accommodates guests moving freely, whether lingering for food or circulating with drinks. Helms and her team worked to complete the project before the holiday season, aiming to create a space that would be inviting and cheerful throughout the year.
The clients desired a warmer aesthetic compared to their previous black and white kitchen. Helms noted that Taj Mahal quartzite was an ideal choice because it offers a modern feel while incorporating warm grays and neutral tones, preventing the space from appearing too cold. Stone Fabricators in Olivette collaborated on the project, ensuring the luxurious islands with their distinctive waterfall edges would be durable. Quartzite, a natural stone, is known for combining the elegant veining of marble with the robust strength of granite, making it a suitable and hard-wearing option for high-use areas such as kitchen islands and bathroom vanities.
The design incorporated hanging light pendants and wall sconces that feature a stone similar to Taj Mahal quartzite, coordinating with the full-height backsplash. The color palette is further warmed by oak wood cabinets, which extend from floor to ceiling. These cabinets also cleverly conceal various appliances, including a paneled refrigerator, freezer, icemaker, and dishwasher, contributing to a sleek and integrated appearance. The kitchen is equipped for large gatherings and dinner parties, featuring a double oven, two sinks, a pot-filler faucet, and a wine fridge, emphasizing its functionality for hosting.
Helms highlighted the use of integrated cabinet doors for appliances, which creates a seamless look, especially crucial in a kitchen that is part of an open hearth room. This design choice prevents the space from being dominated by a "big wall of stainless appliances." The kitchen's aesthetic is enhanced by black-and-gold bar stools and brushed gold hardware throughout. Despite the inclusion of some white cabinets, the design firm successfully avoided a stark white kitchen by balancing soft tones with bright, modern finishes. Helms observed that the current design trend leans towards warming up interior spaces through elements like wood, stone, and brass, and this project exemplifies that approach.
