Nestled in the historical Nandi hills of Karnataka, a region known as Anandagiri, a 5,420-square-foot holiday home designed by Plavi Design Studio beautifully merges ancient legacies with modern functionality. The clients envisioned a residence that would narrate their family's heritage while seamlessly integrating traditional artistry with contemporary living. Plavita Borah of Plavi Design Studio undertook the task of transforming this vision into reality, incorporating cherished heirlooms and a modern aesthetic throughout the space. The design emphasizes a fluid connection between the indoors and outdoors, as well as a harmonious blend of past and present, drawing inspiration from both the family's history and the surrounding environment. The home is enveloped by lush greenery, offering panoramic views of dense forests and expansive gardens, which cultivate a serene atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a welcoming foyer that balances historical charm with modern touches. A century-old wooden partition, adorned with hand-painted panels and intricate carvings, serves as a prominent feature on the central wall. The restoration of this fragile heirloom presented a significant challenge, requiring delicate handling and secure installation. This piece is complemented by a dark eucalyptus wood bench, treated with the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban charring technique for durability and finished with premium Belgian oil. This combination of old and new establishes a compelling visual narrative that aligns with the home's temporal ambiguity. The entryway leads into a thoughtfully designed passageway facing the main staircase. An antique wooden mirror adds visual depth, while a sleek shoe cabinet introduces a modern element. Beyond this, an open-plan living and dining area unfolds. The dining room's focal point is a vibrant oil painting by JMS Mani, which injects a burst of color amidst the predominant earthy and neutral tones. This dynamic artwork is anchored by a solid wood sideboard featuring rattan fluted details, which harmonizes with the stained-black ashwood dining table and rosewood high-backed chairs. Overhead, airy jute pendant lights illuminate the space. The living room is distinguished by floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, providing stunning views and fostering a seamless integration of the interior with the natural surroundings. To maintain an unobstructed vista, a custom low-height daybed with striped fabric is positioned at the far end of the room. Sheer linen curtains enhance the airy ambiance, further connecting the interior to the external landscape. The color and material palettes, inspired by nature, were carefully chosen to evoke warmth and an inviting atmosphere. Soft accents of blue and green, along with bolder hues of rust and brown, draw from the natural environment, promoting a sense of fluidity. A neutral off-white base allows the vibrant color scheme to achieve its full potential. The living area is centered around a bespoke solid wood coffee table, which showcases the clients' extensive collection of curios. While much of the furniture adheres to a neutral palette, an antique accent chair introduces a striking ocean blue hue. Sustainability was a key consideration in the design process, with efforts made to repurpose existing furniture and integrate heirloom pieces to preserve their historical significance. Any new furniture was crafted from responsibly sourced materials. The living room also features a vintage pull-out bar, meticulously refurbished to retain the home's nostalgic character. Upstairs, the master bedroom exudes old-world elegance. A restored roll-top desk, a cherished family heirloom that once belonged to the client’s father, faces the door, complemented by an antique painting. A sturdy wooden bed is paired with twin bedside tables, creating a cohesive look with the striped grey blinds and rich green curtains. A cozy nook in the corner, furnished with two upholstered chairs, offers a tranquil space for relaxation and intimate conversations. This holiday home in Nandi hills achieves a perfect balance between antiquity and modernity, creating a serene sanctuary rooted in the past while vibrant with the present.
