Teenage dirtbag? How to declutter and design the perfect room for your teen
Designing a teen's bedroom requires balancing practicality with their evolving sense of identity, often leading to a focus on damage limitation. For families with larger homes, a designated 'teenage den' with ample, robust, and washable seating is ideal, especially considering the need for good screen access for gamers. However, for most, the bedroom serves as a crucial retreat. When designing a teen's private space, key elements include a comfortable bed with a good mattress and base, as teenagers frequently use their beds for both sleeping and online activities.
For girls, a separate dressing table is beneficial, keeping study and make-up areas distinct. It is recommended that such surfaces be easily wiped clean or protected with glass to prevent stains from grooming products. A large mirror with good lighting is also essential for self-grooming. When it comes to study areas, a large desk is advisable, as despite the digital age, much learning still involves physical books and writing. A trestle table offers flexibility in sizing. Practical additions include a pin-board or white-board above the desk and shelving with adequate spacing (e.g., 32cm) to accommodate school books and lever-arch files.
While studying in bedrooms is a common expectation, not all teenagers prefer it. Some may seek privacy for focused work, while others, like Tara O'Sullivan (17), find it isolating and prefer common areas for homework. O'Sullivan highlights the versatility of an Ikea Hemnes daybed, which can convert from a single to a double and offers significant storage. For shared living spaces, accessible and color-coded laundry baskets can encourage teens to manage their own clothes.
For those fortunate enough to have en-suite bathrooms, making them easy to clean is paramount. Features such as hinged shower doors and small wash basins are recommended to prevent mold buildup and simplify cleaning tasks. Ultimately, parenting teenagers involves navigating their developing autonomy and personal preferences, and designing their space is no exception; finding the 'right' approach often proves elusive.
