Grayson White Ceramics: A Montclair Pottery Studio
Grayson White Ceramics, founded by Montclair-raised artist Caroline White, produces handcrafted household pottery that blends modern aesthetics with earthy tones. Each piece, from coffee tumblers to vases and candleholders, is individually created on a pottery wheel, hand-sculpted, dried, and then glazed through a series of firings in her personal kiln. This meticulous process, while painstaking, is a labor of love for White.
Caroline White, a creative individual, balances her passion for pottery with her full-time role as a communications strategist in social impact and community development finance. Her fascination with how home objects can shape a space led her to explore pottery, initially through classes in Brooklyn. She dedicated countless hours to practicing and experimenting with glazes, finding that pottery allowed her to pursue her creative needs outside of her professional work. The name 'Grayson White' honors her grandfather's middle name and her father's last name, reflecting a personal connection to her ancestry and the values that have influenced her.
The genesis of Grayson White Ceramics was significantly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. When faced with lockdown, White chose to return to her family home in Montclair, where she transformed her parents' unused garage into a pottery studio. This space, characterized by good light and a quiet environment, became her creative sanctuary. Her studio is noted for its organization, with unglazed pottery neatly arranged on shelves for drying and tools meticulously grouped. This orderliness is mirrored in her finished products, which exhibit such uniformity that they might appear machine-made despite being handcrafted.
Pottery is a demanding craft, requiring strength, control, and a deep understanding of the material. Caroline demonstrates a natural aptitude for it, effortlessly shaping clay on the wheel, her movements fluid and precise. The process of creating each ceramic piece is intricate, involving more than just shaping the clay. Different types of clay demand varying techniques and moisture levels, and White carefully selects materials to achieve her desired outcomes, often gravitating towards gentle, calming earth tones. To ensure consistency, she weighs each lump of clay, although she emphasizes that every piece retains its unique character.
After sculpting, the clay must undergo a precise drying and firing process to achieve strength and stability. All moisture must be removed, initially through air-drying, followed by two distinct firings in a kiln: a bisque fire at a lower temperature and a glaze fire at a higher temperature. Between these firings, the bisque-fired piece is hand-dipped in custom glazes, formulated through White's own recipes and extensive experimentation. Developing a new glaze can take approximately three months, involving a detailed understanding of how different minerals react under heat. The final firing seals and hardens the pottery, resulting in subtle variations that contribute to the natural and cohesive feel of each piece. From start to finish, one Grayson White ceramic piece can take up to six weeks to complete. Caroline views each creation not merely as a product, but as an embodiment of her creative passion, hoping that her work becomes a cherished part of her customers' daily lives. She advises aspiring creatives to pursue multiple passions and not feel constrained by a single path.
Grayson White Ceramics operates an online shop, with product drops announced via newsletter due to high demand and the limited availability of handcrafted items. White's pieces frequently sell out on the day of release. For those interested in learning the craft, Caroline also offers private pottery lessons at her Montclair studio, providing an opportunity to create and have personal ceramic pieces fired and glazed.
