Before + After: A Pre-Teen Bedroom With Sophistication To Spare
Designer Nicole Gibbons undertook a significant room makeover for Carsten, the 12-year-old son of New York Yankees star pitcher CC Sabathia and his wife, Amber. The primary objective was to transform Carsten's nursery rhyme-themed room into a more mature and sophisticated space that he would not outgrow, ideally one he could still appreciate through his college years. Gibbons faced the challenge of balancing childhood sentimentality with a more grown-up aesthetic, while also incorporating practical storage solutions and personal interests.
Key requirements for the room design included ample storage for Carsten's diverse sports equipment, a dedicated area for homework, prominent display spaces for his collection of bobbleheads and athletic trophies, sufficient room for video game sessions, and comfortable lounging areas for friends. A central theme was Carsten's admiration for basketball legend Michael Jordan, which Gibbons integrated into the overall design.
To achieve the desired adult feel, Gibbons opted for durable and timeless furnishings and materials rather than child-specific items. The designer stated that if the art and accessories were removed, the room's design would not immediately suggest it was a child's space. The furniture selections included a Chamber bed from Hickory Chair, upholstered in a Fabricut fabric, and nightstands from The New Traditionalist, which complemented an adjacent credenza. Lighting was provided by Sona Oval lamps from Arteriors, and the walls were adorned with a faux vintage leather covering from Mulberry.
Custom-designed elements addressed Carsten's specific needs. A central cubby within the credenza was ingeniously designed to open and retract, accommodating his video game system. The ceiling featured a bold red and white wallpaper from Brunschwig & Fils, drawing inspiration from Carsten's favorite Air Jordan sneakers, the Jordan 3s. Practical storage for sports equipment was integrated into cubbies located beneath the room's large window.
This window area was further enhanced with a built-in bookcase, providing a display space for Carsten's trophies and sports memorabilia, such as a signed Michael Jordan ball, sneakers autographed by NBA player Chris Paul, and various Yankees items, alongside his bobblehead collection. A long window seat, upholstered in a faux bois-patterned fabric resembling a basketball court's woodgrain, served as a comfortable spot for social gatherings. For the study area, Gibbons commissioned a graphic designer to create a poster for Carsten's desk, featuring quotes from Michael Jordan's notable "Failure" commercial from the 1990s. The black leather-upholstered study desk was paired with a Bertoia chair by Knoll, and the Yul table lamp from Circa Lighting provided illumination.
